I'm still having very little luck finding diamonds

Find a natural cavern, dig around a bit and find some lava, they're more likely to be near to some lava.
Deep inside the world is your best bet
I generally find that diamond is in the same place as loads of gold, lapis lazuli and redstone, but there is lots more of the others obviously
But watch out for creepers, zombies and skeletons, they're a menace when your diamond hunting as everything is dark until you've lit it up...
Also, don't dig straight down, dig down in a formation of 2, to avoid hitting a natural cavern without warning and plunging in to lava...
I generally cavern hunt by digging down until I hear a zombie running around then dig outwards from my shaft, block the shaft when you get in and light it up on the way down, it's horrible having a creeper fall on your head.....
Oh yes I know that stuff
getting shed loads of redstone, some gold and lapis, but no diamonds.
Well I did find my first 3 blocks today
What I've been doing is not going down caves, instead I dig a glass roofed shaft down to bed rock, then branch off about 10 levels up to find lava chambers.
At the same time I'm clearing a large gallery to make a mob trap.
edit: spent nearly 3-4 hours today mining out a flat area 2 blocks high, 32 wide and 48 long, I found 3 lava pools, nearly filled a double chest with cobbles.
Coal 5x64
Iron 4x64
red stone 8X64
Gold 36
Lapis 30
diamonds 3
Used; 1 diamond pick, ~12-15 steel picks, 2 steel shovels and about 90 torches (to be safe and make sure I don't miss any ore)

There used to be a general rule when trying to find diamond in Minecraft but I think the updates mean this has changed.
Im not at home so cant test, but try following this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jY8wkPPDoNA
I usually take wood with me and just use stone picks, there's no point wasting iron/diamond on mining stone, save them for the better stuff
There is scores and scores of stone compared to everything else obviously
True, I normally stick to stone only using iron when I have to mine out redstone or gold or simular.
However the difference in speed between stone, iron and diamond, when you are clearing a large area is very pronounced.
My trap worked ok but not great, the catchment area needed to be bigger, so I left it afk for a while and build up some gun powder and then expanded it with tnt
if surrounded by stone a tnt will clear a 3x3x3 cube, so dig a 2 deep hole in a wall place the tnt, then a cobble, stick a button on the outside, press the button and get clear
Granted you risk losing ore, but you can clear area fast that way.
My trap catchment room is now 48x48 and works better, but still needs tweeking.

eeeeegads yeah, you can save loooooooooooads of time, I was tempted to use a better pick as i've been tunnelling and building for ~4 hours straight...
I do now have duel waterfalls that go through ~5 levels of my house, through a cavern and down to my underground lair landing in the correct place, and stairs all the way back up that emerge right next to my front door, which is no mean feat when digging from the ground levels of the world back up to the top...
And a rear entrance that goes underground through 2 mountains and emerges at my open air lava pit.
3 side entrances.
One of which emerges at my tree farm that I keep getting massive trees from.
And a wheat farm out the front of the house
Oh and quite a large window from the top of my house and through all floors that gives me natural light right down at the ground level
Try out the 'gargamel' seed if you haven't already... Lovely world to play in
Yep yep, that's the one
Now climb out of the cave and take a gander and wander around.
See that mountain, that one there, with the hole in the side, go through, there's a lake... Being fed by two waterfalls on the left face and the rear face of the mountain you just climbed through...
Go climb the mountain from the otherside... You can get behind both waterfalls..
Climb out of the basin via the mountain at the front, have a look around out there too...
The mountains are your oysters, there's stuff everywhere
