"Thousands gather outside stores to get Sony's new portable."

    http://psp.ign.com/articles/572/572543p1.html

The PSP launch was huge. The famous Yodobashi Camera in Shinjuku reportedly had over 1,200 waiting in line when the store opened up shop at 6:00AM exclusively for PSP sales. It was joined by other Yodobashi locations, which also had such huge numbers waiting to get a PSP on day one.
    Come on reviews :eek3d:

That top picture is quite funny actually, if a little childish. After all, Nintendo have only sold 120 million GameBoys.

Anyway, from a review of the Japanese Ridge Racers - 'As one of the more technically impressive PSP games, Ridge Racers has been the subject of much speculation regarding the system's battery life. While the battery has been rated for six hours of gameplay, that number seems to drop a bit when playing a game like Ridge Racers, which chews through battery life more quickly. Though battery life is something that can be difficult to gauge, it seems like Ridge Racers could chop that six hour number in half, if not more. Ridge Racers also has some noticeable load times that occur upon booting the game, and upon entering or exiting a race. While you'll notice the load times, they don't seem excruciatingly long, either.'

So, six hours, chopped in half, if not more... so, 2 hours? 2 and a half?

Not good. So, how much will 3 spare batteries set me back?

Yeah I suppose, it wont stop me buying one. Its just a worry. I mean six hours cut in half and then some is a bit dodgy.

No doubt Sony will update it in a year when they sort the battery life as apple has done with the ipod. If you can wait that long . Having said that i cant really afford to pay £200 for one... £100 with a few good games would hit the spot

Apparently a *lot* can be done with careful coding to aid the battery life, and I'm hearing rumours that both the batteries and the power consumption of the hardware are being looked at for a fix further down the line

Its about time someone came at Nintendo with a half decent product to be honest, after they crushed without mercy mush like the GameGear, that thing from NeoGeo, and various other no hopers.

The PSP looks more than half decent, it looks the match for the DS in every way - I don't think anyone who owns either of these things is going to be disapointed.

As for me... I'm undecided. Got the cashg for one of them though, deffo. The lure of Nintendo's next gen of first party titles is a big one, but then, Sony have the likes of Metal Gear Acid, the Final Fantasy games, etc.

    Hard one...

The screen is actually the real 'battery-eater' unfortunately they cant really do anything about that via software, thats why you'll hear all this talk about the disc drive, because thats the one thing they can mess with to save battery. Just like the GBA SP, you'll notice the battery life nearly double when the light is off.

Oh, and battery life has been clocked in at an average of 5 hours, and minimum of 3, although the latest reviews will have better figures, so its not at all that bad, and one spare battery will see you through unless you have some chronic gaming complex

6 hours chopped in half or more. Maybe as little as 2 on some games? Who knows.

The screen is a beauty though, its worth it for that alone. As you say, to save battery, you have to stay away from disc access.

The line up though - Metal Gear Acid, Ridge Racers, all good, but where's the real killer AAA titles in the first batch of games? I suppose that is Metal Gear really. Not much else gets me excited.

A few bad reports about the first batch of PSP's lads, air bubbles behind the screen, dead pixels, buttons pressing down and not coming up, and others. Pics below.

Maybe best to hang on for the US\UK release...

lol not much surprise there vaul

this will be another case of a technically inferior console selling more than the better one imho. just like with the PSX/N64 and PS2/GC [in both cases nintendo had the better console but lost out on sales]

that said i am still getting a DS when my quiz.tv money comes through

Well, the Playstation was a fine machine itself though, although I sold mine and got an N64. Nintendo have also done this the other way around - the SEGA Master System was a better machine than the NES, but the NES outsold it in most places.

Anyway, the US \ UK release is early next year, so maybe its not a bad idea to wait, save a bit of cash, and avoid first batch problems.

    Maybe...
