O-Game or X3 for me, mainly because they're the only ones I've played
the only space sims ive played are haegemonia and nexus: the jupiter incident.
not sure which ones better, because i only played the first tutorial on nexus, then i melted my PC. no idea whether any of them work under win7. haegemonia didn't work on vista.
my sisters got a copy of freespace2 lying around somewhere, might ask if i can try it.
Privateer 2 - spent a long time playing this, very enjoyable, interesting story and nice cutscenes.

Probably Freespace 2 or X-Wing Vs Tie Fighter...great fun both.
Wing Commander 4
it has to be EVE Online!

I turely love space sim have played them for years, like many others I started with elite on the bbcb (probably the best version of it) and the first ever non-shareware game on the pc I paid money for was wing commander2 and bought wing commander 1 about a month later.
Best ever is tough as there are so many differences in them.
Combat mission based has to be Freespace, Freespace 2 was great in some parts, nice following story much needed improvements to captial ships, but the roll of a fighter and dog fighting lost a lot over the first, the fighters got too powerful, fast and maneuverable, it detracted from dogfighting makeing everything too reliant on missiles.
Also the beef up on captial ships made bombers far to weak, the battles became captial ships slugging it out and squadrens of bombers could just add in thoes few extra % of damage to tip the ballance.
WC2 is not far behind FS1, the story is great the combat was hectic and I loved the ballance of weak sheilds and high armour (non-repairable), One of the thing that WC2 had going for it was the damage effects, the more your ship got shot up the more damage would occure to your cocpit.
I still remember one epic patrol where my ship got sooo shot up, I only had one cocpit monitor left and that would keep cutting out, only 2 guns left, max speed and turn rate badly reduced and massive cracks across my canopy (nothing freaks you out like seeing cracks appearing in your canopy) I just managed to lip back and land, still being chased.
Then you got the landing cut scene and I'd never seen my ship that shot up.
That landing cut scene was a genious touch.
I liked X2 but the combat and sectors let it down.
Iwar2 Probably has the best ballance of semi-realistic space sim vs playable combat of any space game, it was truely a joy to fly and fight in Iwar2, shame about the whole "tradeing" and "space piracy" thing.
A lovely well crafted sector and only 3 of 4 points you could sanely commit acts of piracy and survive, so you'd just go to thoes safe points and never see the rest of the sector bar flying through it looking in vane for another safe point.
Tachyon: The Fringe was a nice game but without Bruce Campbell doing the voice over it wouldn't of been any ware near as enjoyable.
Freelancer I really liked as well, I know it came under a lot of flak for getting the scale of star systems totally wrong and the jump gate highways, but I could forgive it these factors as the fake scaleing of a star system did make them more packed with things to find and explore without hours and hours of flying through emptyness.
I loved the faction reaction system and the way that there's so many different groups and you just cannot be friendly with all of them.
While some people didn't like the way the campaign shepherded you about the galaxy, I did like it, it was a good way of keeping the story flowing, which can be very hard in a freeform sandbox world.

Sorry photobucket links broken
Like many I think the last ones I playered were Starlancer/Freelancer. Although after what I have just seen, the new fan made 3d, online multiplayer and co-op remake of starwing/starfox I think I could play that for years when it finally lands
Steam: (Grey_Mata) || Hexus Trust
Got to go with the original elite, too. Must remember to copy my BBC emulator when I break down my old PC so I can carry on blasting pirates to bits
Frontier: first encounters - with my lowly viper mk2, class II military drive, 4mw beam lazer and a couple of sheild generators.... utter legend!
also I-war and I-war2.. for a balance of action and good space physics (i had the original ms force feedback sidewinder at the time - and it was one of the few games that supported it)
Only space game I've played is eve online, which was fun (I'd play it if it weren't for the monthly fee)
X3 Terran Conflict due to it's interface. X3 Reunion drove me nuts back then... X:BTF wasn't too bad, Turbo SETAing through several Xenon sectors was fun.
