Oh come on now everyone knows that Crowded House were the most legendary band in all of the English speaking world........

    Closely followed by The Proclaimers!

On a more serious and impartial note, has anyone been watching the BBC's Seven ages or rock?
There is also the excellent "please insert the name of the series" whereby all the American and British bands are linked and analysed throughout the 50's to the 90's, I just can't think of what it's called but it's a great series and pieces together many genres.

I think that the US and Britain are linked like brothers when it comes to modern (pop) music which has it's roots in the Blues. I think that each culture feeds of the other and therefore innovations are driven by wanting to immitate "idols" and then do something different (with the availablility of ever advancing technology) which creates a different sound and ultimately movement.

Oh er I've come across all Melody Maker and NME.

Somehow I missed this comment. You need to go to a Jamaican record store

Well, I went on a random whirlwind tour though my musical taste and ultimately concluded- yes Brits are best.

But it's kind of pointless to take sides. I think Simon and Garfunkle were the best 60's band by a mile. In their wake, I'd take the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Hendrix and the Stones in that order. And in the 70s- The Carpenters/James Brown/Chic vs Black Sabbath/Pink Floyd/The Sex Pistols. Who's to say?

It all gets meaningless, TBH. Good music is good music. Listen to whatever the hell you like and enjoy it. For the last three days or so I've been obsessed by this:

    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=i6uChtN8YcU

Written by Leff Lynne (a Brit), sung by OL-J (an Aussie), and produced by Americans. What matters is that I think it's utterly awesome and I could listen to it endlessly.

Edit: not that I'm saying that it's good. I daresay most people think Xanadu is cheesy old ****e. i love it though. I also have every Abba album apart from the first two, and I frequently dig out Voulez Vous and Super Trouper.....to listen to the album tracks. I know I have freaky taste, and I don't try to fight it.

I think that this is a pretty good summation. You like what you like whether you be Yankie or Limey! And what's more there is a whole plethora of music that can be enjoyed regardless or nationality or musical genre, it's all upto the individual.

I'm sure that even through the "Beatles and the Stones" era that both sets of fans bought "each others sides records".

That's the best attitude - I hate genre-nazi's and pidgeon-holing. As long as you like it, it doesn't matter who produced it, when it was produced, where it was produced, or which currency it sold in.

I wouldn't particularly like anything more if it was British either - for me the music is either good or bad - anything inbetween needs a few more listens

A few of your posts are awfully vague paulq. Hopefully my suspicion that you're either heading right for the For Sale forum or the Scan offer are unfounded

Sex Pistols, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath to name a few of the bands that I personally feel had a big influence.

Favourite band of all time and listen to them regularly is The Jam, Paul Weller is great.

Are there any bands today that could last a while longer yet?
U2, formed in the late 70s

(and i believe that strictly speaking - they aren't British?)

I can't play any instrument except Guitar Hero.....but I'm proud to say the British Music scene is totally No1.

I'd just miss Aerosmith if you cut off other countries music....and I might then die

I'd argue that the most inspiring band of the past 3 decades was R.E.M. myself - Nirvana, Radiohead, Oasis, Blur, Cast, The La's - chances are we'd not have heard of them if it wasn't for that little college band from Georgia.

So sorry, but I'm a traitorous wretch.

I suppose it's a little pedantic, but you should real ask which music do you think is the 'bestest'. I mostly like British music but a few U.S. bands have squeezed into my collection.

Most people should like this (not): I personally don't like the Beatles.

I'd disagree, it's easy for us to say, because we are listening to our music. But what about if you asked Sweden, India, Japan and anywhere else? 'Popular' music is a vague genre at best and because of that I can't really believe any of it to be influencial in any significant way.

    Oh and

Admittedly some of my faves, S.O.D. Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies, D.R.I. Public Enemy, Ice Cube etc are indeed American, they're forgiven lol and J-rock rules Thee Michelle Gun Elephant, Guitar Wolf, Polysics & Mad Capsule Markets to name but a few. I'm not negating the world wide music scene at all, but you have to admit we are supreme innovators.

I'd also like to say I'm not forgeting the diversity of British music, desi/bhangra etc really leading the way in their genre and crossing over to the 'mainstream' western market, just as one example. It's the British attitude that Rocks! not the governmental bigoted one, but the people! people.
