Taking the past 50 years in popular music as a whole, overall I believe British and British influenced music is by far the most innovative and influential on a worldwide scale.

Depends if you are an Elvis or a Beatles man.
British music all the way. Dont agree with decent American music, But thats my own personal taste
Popular music...for sure.
British music .
But I had a thought the other day. There are bands that were formed in the 60's still around today (status quo, rolling stones and remaining queen and who members). However, I don't know of any bands that are still around today that were formed after the 60's (except singers like madonna/kylie), or especially not recently anyway.
Are there any bands today that could last a while longer yet?
Marillion.
Going strong

we are the birth of the punk movement - without us there'd be no dead kennedys, NOFX, D.O.A., Bad Brains etc
we birthed teh goth movement on the arse end of the punk years) - so you'd have no decent german goth bands like merry thoughts etc
With bands like Sabbath, Hawkwind, Stones, Led Zep, Deep Purple, you wouldn't have your metallica, mega****e, sorry megadeth, SOD, Anthrax, NiN, Ministry et all.
So yes,
WE FOOKN ROCK
However, we are pish when it comes to Chinese Drums, they really rock

"innovative and influential"? The UK is up there, but then again we didn't have Brian Wilson, Phil Spector, or Lee "Scratch" Perry---three of the most influential producers of all time. Nor did we invent hip-hop, which I believe is now the world's biggest selling genre (and which is now influencing just about everything). House music is predominantly American, and that was VERY influential. Bob Dylan is american, and his influence is beyond measure. Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, and the likes of Yngwie Malmsteen have totally redefined what people think of the electric guitar!
Yes, the UK has produced a huuuuuuge amount of influential stuff but "by far" the most influential? No.

That would be fine, but the early british punks were influenced by American bands like the Ramones, Television, The New York Dolls, etc. Punk is not just a British invention; the Americans have almost as much right to claim it as their own, especially in this context of "who was the most influential?"
