Can't say i agree at all tbh, I think that its entirely the other way around. I think that british music has been vastly influenced by other cultures around the world and because of that has grown and evolved. I find that very few *Brit* bands have been very influential in the greater scheme of world music and no, U2 are not British, they are Irish and would be quick to tell you so.

I love a whole load of british bands, i've been into metal since i was around 12 years old and got my hands on Appetite for Destruction, but i have loved U2 since i was around 7, and Big Country around the same time (still one of the best acts live ever, for pure passion and atmosphere). Bands like Poison and Skid Row and Motley Crue were my staple diet for years, and its easy to say they were influenced by Brit bands such as Sabbath and Maiden etc, but its just as true to say that the Dolls and Ramones had every bit as much influence on the late 80's early 90's scene.

Madchester music never really made it past the shores of the UK, so influential, not really. If you are talking about worldwide influence then look at Bob Marley, and Iggy Pop, Beatles, Elvis, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Robson and Jerome, Zeppelin, and so on and so on.

So, in conclusion , the UK scene has taken many influences and churned out some utter utter drivel (spice girls, take that, Big Fun, Bros and all the trappings that go with it), and occasionally has produced some quality acts, none of which have ever taken part in X Factor, Pop Idol or Fame Academy.

I rest my case M'lud and await the prosecutions rebuttal

Right the word is out, the jury has retired to debate. Points for and points across.

At the end of the day all music originated from....

Robson and Jerome! You surely just snook them in for a laugh - I hope.

Anyway I don't agree that British is necessarily best when it come to music. In terms of modern popular music, most genres have their roots in black American music (blues, jazz etc). The possible exception is prog rock which has it's roots in classical music, but then most prog rock is pretty much a load of poncy old guff anyway.

There is of course plenty of great British music it's just not THE best.

hey is it true that the black american/african people invented rock music? numerous people have told me that but i was wondering fi its true?

anyways imo i dont thnk british make the best music, i dont think their is a country that is the best in terms of music. music is a worldwide thing influenced by various contries. just look at hip hop music now, you some times here indian flutes, to jazz influenced being made on a typical hip hop beat.

most of it evolved directly from Blues riffs, so technically that would be correct

maaaaaaaaaaaan don't go down that road.....

    it's too convoluted.

There was a song called "My Baby Rocks Me with a Steady Roll" once, long ago, and a DJ used the phrase.

But back then, Rythm n Blues and Rockabilly were around .... so it's getin complex.

I'd just say that AC/DC may have the answer.

    /cough

/dons School Boy uniform.....and gargles on nails.

    I love AC DC

    In the beginning
    Back in nineteen fifty-five
Man didn't know about a rock 'n' roll show
    And all that jive
The white man had the smoltz
The black man had the blues
No one knew what they was gonna do
    But Tchaikovsky had the news
    He said -
"Let there be sound", and there was sound
"Let there be light", and there was light
"Let there be drums", and there was drums
"Let there be guitar", and there was guitar
    "Let there be rock"
    And it came to pass
That rock 'n' roll was born
All across the land every rockin' band
    Was blowing up a storm
    The guitarman got famous
    The businessman got rich
And in every bar there was a super star
    With a seven year itch
    There were fifteen million fingers
    Learning how to play
And you could hear the fingers picking
And this is what they had to say
    "Let there be light"
    "Sound"
    "Drums"
    "Guitar"
    "Let there be rock"
One night in a club called `The Shaking Hand'
There was a fourty-two decibel rocking band
The music was good and the music was loud
And the singer turned and he said to the crowd -
    "Let there be rock"

'allegedly' Rocket 88 by Ike Turner & his Kings of Rhythm was the first rock & roll record, and it still cooks! Saw him on tour recently & he played it, proper legendary!

Apparently "Bloodnok's Rock'n'Roll Call" (by Dennis Bloodnok of the 43rd Deserters, 1956) was the first british record with 'rock' in its title.
