Stick insect.
Or if you're feeling cheap, a stick.
I had a white rat as a pet years ago. Once, it got out, and onto the floor, the cat chased it under a chair. I reached under to get him, and he must have thought it was the cat, because he sank his rat teeth into my finger.
So, if you get a rat, and it gets out, and the cat chases it under the chair, don't reach in to get it, because if the rat thinks its the cat, he'll sink his rat teeth into you.
True story.
My rat used to bite me if I stuck my finger through the bars of its cage- but only because it thought my finger was something to eat. My brother's weedy white rat did not. Out of the cage- or when I reached into the cage to pick them up- they were good as gold, except for the time I let them run around on my bed and they chewed a lot of holes through my school trousers.
They're genuinely great pets, and if I had time I'd get another. As kickstart says though, getting someone to look after them when you go away is a real pain- they have a bad rep.
Had pet mice and rats, would recomend both
I used to have a rat years ago. He was awesome. I'd definitely recommend a rat.
Breed was a degus? something like that.. can't really remember - just very cute!

Hamsters are pretty cool, I vote hamster.
I don't. I once found a juvenile male hamster running about in the road late at night. I picked him up and took him home- he would definately have starved or been eaten by a fox had I not done so.
He turned out to be a miserable bastard- if you tried to dig him out of his house for a play during the day he would inevitably bite you- and the replacement we got when he died was nearly (but not quite) as antisocial. Rats OTOH really seem to love company and are never agressive in my experience.
I agree with Rave, hamsters sleep all day , come out at night and bite you for the slightest things, grumpy little sods !
I've owned ferrets in the past, including being a foster parent for a couple when I lived in the US (sad I know).
They are great house pets, they like sleeping alot, and when they get 'twinkle toes' it's ace to watch! They do have a very distinctive smell (some say stink) and they it's tough to train them to poo in a litter tray (possible though) - so expect some little 'presents' in the corners of the room...
They are also fine to live in a cage (largest one though if poss) so long as they get a good run about once you are home.
