I'm not sure there's that much help available from the EU.. Italy certainly isn't feeling the love. While the EU's days were numbered, the virus has done nothing but hasten it's demise.

Appart from ordering ventilators as a block so that the bulk buying power means the money goes further, achieves a sence of solidarity, can be spead out where needed most over the block, and have more leverage with sellers. And the EU is intergovernmental not federal so Italy, Spain, UK ect. have no one to blame but themselves for the approch taken. They took the complacency approch and are paying the price. Clear and consistent advice was given from the start by the EU, test, trace contain, Germany followed that advice and they're somewhere closer to South Korea in thier suppression of the virus.
But just take a look at the US where the federal system has lead to individual states outbidding each other on the same ventilators. If you are looking at nails in coffins, it's probably the US as the biggest ecconomy. Lets hope Biden can sort out trumps mess, after trump took your approch of "no worse than the flu".
As for hastening demise, the virus is more likley to hasten the demise of dominic cummings, boirs, farage and brexit IMHO.
Besides only a few days ago, you were expressing your extreme dislike for people that liked to politicize illness, yet here you.

Isn't Chinas economy already bigger by a lot of metrics? I don't think Biden will win the election, I'm fully expecting President Pence to beat him.
As for the rest of it, Brexit has already happened and Farage has kept his head down since. It should get rid of Cummings and may yet literally or metaphorically finish off Johnson but I doubt it.
Bexit happened in name only. Nothing changes until dec 31st 2020 / Jan 1st 2021. And the only option is no deal or delay, becuase another shock to the economy will be impossible politically, the only option is delay.
Puplic oppion is clear, extend the transition period 55% for to 24% agaisnt
https://whatukthinks.org/eu/question...irus-outbreak/
we can't get workers to pick crops, it will be delayed minium another 2 years.
EDIT: Pence, god help us! he may not be as thick as Trump but I bet he grabbed a few more things.

Some news out of Italy:
Italy: the real number of COVID-19 cases in the country could be 5,000,0000 (compared to the 119,827 confirmed ones) according to a study which polled people with symptoms who have not been tested, and up to 10,000,000 or even 20,0000,000 after taking into account asymptomatic cases, according to Carlo La Vecchia, a Professor of Medical Statistics and Epidemiology at the Statale di Milano University.
While bigger numbers sound scary, this aligns with the previous data that this virus is actually extremely widespread. Using these numbers for total infections, would lead to a mortality rate between 0.27% and 0.07%. Lower than the mortality rate for Flu in Italy of 0.33%.
Good data for total infections relies on antibody testing. Hopefully soon.

and asymptomatic flu is 50% of confirmed cases, and unreported is much higher.
If you're still going down the same death rate as flu route, you should apply your logic to both viruses.
if you have statistics of the death rate from flu under a global lockdown then people might be inclined to take your points into acoount.
But i think that information isn't going to be provided, because it's false science. And just to put into perspective, without any action the death toll in the UK was suggested it could be as high as 250k people. That's the same as low expectaion of global annual death rate for flu witout a lockdown. This is not flu, is nothing like flu and without a lockdown global death could be well over 50m people, 10 x the top annual flu death toll. The current established consensus is 0.1% for flu vs 1% for covid-19 it's close to the original estimated death rates that have been stated over and over.
anyone can find an "expert" that has a different off the wall approch that defies most of the mainstreem experts. Tune into any bias news channel and you'll find an "expert", but ill go along with the logic.

Has anyone else noticed that on the bbc they are saying the nhs is coping without interviewing anyone from the nhs. However on channel 4 news they are interviewing people from the nhs who are saying they are at a breaking point.

Im sure many people, me included probably agree with DK2019t, and I know the hexus forum likes to keep it on the light hearted side which I fully understand. However this is the biggest global catastrophe that has happened in probaby every members lifetime, and separating it from politics is unrealistic.
Is it possible to discuss the politics around the pandemic as long as there are no personal insults. I appologise for my reactions but, i know that no matter what peoples political views are, the goal for all of us is the same.
I know we are all effected by this and we all want the same outcome regarding the welfare of the human race wether it's directly from the virus or the repercussions.
If it's not possible and the thread must be 100% about the virus, can another thread be opened specifically for the politics arround the pandemic?
Thanks for being patient and not closing the thread so far.
