Let's use an example: A guy went out drinking with a group of his buddies and in their drunken states the guys thought 'it would be a laugh' to beat up someone who just bumped into one in the group... The guys, without being under the influence of alcohol, would not do that, normally. But since they were, they went ahead.

Who's fault is that? The alcohol? Or is it the guys who drank too much?

This is a very realistic example as this happens up and down the country on every Friday and Saturday nights. The ability to go and enjoy yourself is your human right. However, the ensuing trouble the drunks cause is a crime. Simple

You have taken a bit of a strange attitude to this whole idea of being caught smoking weed in a public place and the drugs thing in general.

The laws are there to protect the public, i don't give a crap if you think you're safe after you have smoked however many joints you enjoy, or however many pints you've downed. The point is, for every person that 'can' handle their drug or drink problem, there is 10/20/50/100 that can't. A policeman won't distinguish you from the moron down the road who him, with his 3 other mates have just kicked a husband and father half to death because they were high on drugs, and he just happened to walk on the same side of the road.

Understand you and your friends with your habit are not the only people living on this:

    nanny state

I gotta agree with you there tom, I don't cause trouble when im drunk or stoned but others do, but the other side of it is, the kid who just smacked the sh!t outta a granny for the £10 in her purse.......he goes to court, says he was high by this time a test would show up no trace , he gets rehab and community service instead.

I'm not sayin this is every case but i'd imagine it goes on pretty frequently

...Either that or he gets a holiday with 10 other 'young-offenders' because they showed improvement and apologised for leaving the father with brain damage and needing permanent care. This is the part of the system that really sucks

well, I know for sure that I have never stolen or attacked any1 to fund my hobbies (i prefer the term to addiction ) and I think your drawing abstract conclusions from extreme examples, people break in to houses so they can steal the TV sell the cash for other reasons as well as drugs, I think drugs is something that cuts across society, I myself hold down a full time job and my girlfriend has a full time jkob a college course and a part time job in a bar. we pay our rent, pay for a car and support ourselves, we dont recive any handouts and we are totally independan, we also like to get mashed on weekends and smoke a few joints after work. I think we are more like the average drug user as I havea lot of friends who are exactly the same. there is of course the people who do steal to buy smack and stuff but they are the result of factors often not related to drug use. I think you are generalising when you say:

"We cannot allow people who go and commit burglary, robbery and other types of crime to fund their addictions." and " A large group of addicts will not be able to continue their employment to fund their addictions."

I have been doing this for several years now, and I dont have any problems.

and I suppose after years of drug abuse when you need some medical attention you'll go through a private hospital rather than the NHS? I know I'll probably get quoted figures about alcohol but I think people saying that they are causing no one any harm etc are misleading themselves

well, a nice update to this story now...
i've been asked/told to leave home and find somewhere else to live. had a massive argument with my mom, and it aint turned out right at all. i gotto go up the housing office tomorrow and try and find a flat. looks like i'll have to survive of benefits and the bit of cash i get from work till i finish college. either that or quite college. this sucks sooo bad.

argh unlucky, fair enough you like your weed but is it honestly worth this? Can't you just give up and I'm sure they'll let you stay, it's gotta be better than getting evicted. I quit a year and a half ago and haven't touched it since so it can be done.

apparently its cos of my attitude in general, and this just topped it all off. i genuinly did try and get along with my parents before, they are just so uptight and unprepared to see anyone else's point of view. i recon livin on me own wud be a good move, even tho it will mess up my education and future rather a lot

You need to apologise and beg to your mum and dad as much as you can here m8 tbh. If you had such a strong bond in the first place they surely can't be demanding and dis-owning you now...??

Despite breaking the law and the whole thing on drugs, this is very sad to hear Total sympathy on this part of the issue.

hipocracy... blatent hipocracy (and no i probably didnt spell that word right).

It is legal to sell and smoke tobacco in public, when it is know to cause lung cancer. Death in a box. Taxed by the goveronment.

It is legal to sell and consume alcahol. Which then leads to liver faliure, drink driving, and loutishness. All lead to death. Taxed by the goveronment.

Smoking a joint. No known health risks. Unable to be controlled by the goveronment. Thus illegal.

They cant tax cannabis so its illegal.

smoking and drinking.. A death tax.
