I am just after some 17'' CRT suggestions as the 19'' ones are too overpowering for me!

Will be far better than a TFT and cost less. Can pay a true fortune for a true professional grade CRT (if you've ever read MacUser you'll see monitors with black shrouds, very very expensive pro monitors - calibrated perfectly for design). You could easily calibrate one of the above suggestions though.
Tell me about it! The original DiamondPro 2070SB that I've been trying to find second hand, I think retailed for about £1500 new! That is a stonking unit!

And yes, you should be able to hire a spyder or some other calibration device from a half decent 'local' camera shop for a few quid - that's a must if you're into Digitography.

There doesn't seem to be much variety in the 17" CRT market anymore.. For the difference in price, on ur budget, I'd go for something like Matt has already mentioned - go for 19"+ - you know you want it!

Almost anything with a Sony/NEC/Mitsi tube (check specs) will be grand..

I thoroughly recommend the 19" as when on 1600 × 1200 on a 17" stuff can look a bit small.

Technically a 19", but good dimensions, quality, 1600x display and is 104.56 inc. vat:

Not sure it's 100% flat but would be good enough IMO. A 19" CRT isn't that overpowering these days - they've shrunk well enough to be the same sort of dimensions depth wise as 17" of a few years ago. (this one is 46cm at longest point in each dimension). What do you mean by the neck of the monitor?

If you head onto eBay you can pickup a 21" (or even sometimes a 22" or 24") DELL or Sony CRT in your price range, I have a 21" CRT and theres no comparison for size when gaming

    G4 PowerMac - Tiger 10.4 - 512MB RAM
    MacBook - 2Ghz - 1GB RAM - 120GB HDD

    Rotel RC970BX | DBX DriveRack |2x Rotel RB850
    B&W DM640i | Velodyne 1512

By neck i mean from front to back. Just need a good 17'' monitor. Be it CRT or TFT. It would be nice to know some people's views on some 17'' crt ones

As I think's already been mentioned - of course - a 17" CRT is not going to give you the same viewable space as a 17" TFT.

    AFAIK, you can't actually get a CRT with 17" viewable - it's either a 17" with 15.9-16.2" viewable, or a 19" with around 18" viewable.

Seriously, look towards 19"+ if you can, it'll be well worth making a bit more space for. I still think you're choices for a 17" CRT are limited these days - at least, the ones worth buying anyway...

The advatantage of that monitor is the small footprint, essentially the size of a 19", if not how about the 17" version of that monitor, or even the 17" version of the Dell. THe picture quality on this monitor is superb.

I find TFTs are more comfortable to look at for extended periods of time.

All this talk of monitors has put me in the mood to get a new CRT for gaming, I need something that is 19"+ that will do at least 1600x1200 @85Hz and most importantly it has to be black and cost less than £300'ish! Any recommendations? I've seen a few second hand screens on Ebay but I'm slightly dubious about buying 2nd user CRTs as the screens burn out over time etc

    Thanks in advance...

Don't have any advice on a 19" CRT but second your opinion on 2nd user CRTs as someone I know bought a 21 CRT (Iiyama I think it was) off ebay. Complete waste of money.

I would never buy one off of Ebay!!

I am going to buy either a Good 17'' CRT or the Neovo F417 TFT. Have not made up my mind yet!!
