    CRT or TFT?

After reading on here about problems with dead pixels etc, do you think i would be better off getting a good 17'' CRT monitor? If so, which one? Ta

i used to be scared of TFTs too, but when i switched to TFT there was no going back. Nowadays you can get quality TFTs for a good price.

Thing is, i would hate to buy a TFT and then 6months down the line i find a dead pixel here or there! I don't want to pay a lot for a TFT anyway. I quite like the AG NEOVO F417. I have had my eye on one and the reviews are great! Just don't know what to do. So confused.

99% of CRT's are trouble free. Good old monitors, reliable and good picture quality.

I know i should go for a TFT but i am so undecided because of the dead pixels and the picture quality.

Dead pixels don't develop over time, they are a product of the manufacturing process. You either have them when you buy the monitor or you won't get any.
Picture quality is higher on a TFT.

Well, i have read on some forums people saying that they have had thier TFT monitors for months and then, all of a sudden they find they have a dead pixel! This happened to my mate. Monitor was clear when he bought it and then 4 months later a dead pixel appeared!

I've never had a problem with dead pixels in any TFT's I've used.

But at the same time unless you had specific requirements for a TFT I'd recommend a CRT every time at the moment. Not only are they a lot cheaper, but the quality is still way above that of TFTs. All depends on your usage.

CRTs are good for people who:
    Don't move all that often
Have a normal sized computer desk
Have a good gfx card and want to be able to display at 1600x or higher
Work in bright conditions and who want the most vibrant colours.

TFTs are good for people who:
    Move their computers often
Have a smaller than normal desk and no room for a CRT
Don't have a great gfx card
Need to keep their electricity bills a bit lower
Care a lot about the aesthetic set up of monitor/keyboard.

I want to get a TFT, as I'll be going to Uni next year, and a CRT will be crazy to take around.

hmmm, firstly pixels can get stuck during the lifespan of a screen, secondly the screen itself is very easily scratched as it is a soft plastic laminate, thirdly the display quality is only good at its native setting making it fairly inflexible, forthly they cost a small fortune compared to CRTs...

TFT's often give sharper pixel by pixel images at their native resolution, but don't expect them to work quite so well at anything lower than this resolution (typically 1280x1024 for affordable 17" and 19" TFTs) Most professionals in the graphics arena are still using CRT for the superior colour reproduction and dot-pitch amongst other things. The "professional graphics" LCDs typically have bad (for gaming) response times.

LCD screens are a much more attractive proposition these days and I don't doubt they will improve further and render the CRT practically obsolete.

back on topic - bad pixels are much less of a problem these days, but they can conceivably appear only after a month or two of use. To be sure(or surer) you should either buy your monitor instore and check if you will be allowed to open it there instore to check for dead pixels and whether they will allow you to exchange the unit then and there.

Alternatively buy a Class 1 (I think it's 1...) LCD where they guarantee zero dead pixels. I think Neovo sell one like this - 419 golg edition or something. scan sell this one with a 3 month manufacturers guarantee against dead pixels.

I run my TFT at 1024 etc rather than its native and it still looks good.
It has one dead pixel which i cant see unless i get closer. I sit about 80 cm away
from it. There are companies like iiyama and ctx which have a zero dead pixel policy.

dont forget that a 17 inch CRT has a smaller screen than a 17 inch TFT and so forth.

I've ordered an F417 from ebuyer today and opted for super saver delivery (currently free). Only reason I didn't go for the M417 is because of the angled display - I don't the screen can be positioned flat like most screens with a stand as it has a photo frame type of stand (if you know what I mean).

AG Neovo will replace a screen if the dead pixel is somewhere in the middle of the screen - checkout their website.

Only reason I've upgraded is because my 8 year old Sony 15" CRT has lines on the screen sometimes.

It has to be a TFT. No question. Just make sure you get a decent one with DVI, low response, high brightness. You will be looking at this monitor for a long time so don't skimp on price. I bought a cheap Iiyama E485S (19") and have really regreted it. A bad purchase and one I am constantly reminded of!!!

    Best of luck!

I think what Koolpc really wants is what I wanted until I placed an order for a TFT (actually I wouldn't say no to it now)

a nice top quality (with no dead pixels) TFT screen completely free of charge, that way he can't complain that he got the wrong one

I love CRTs, but if you were to go for a CRT then there'd be no quality gain unless you went for a good quality one. I have a 17" ADI Microscan CRT on one of my computers, it's flat but the quality and colour is exceptional - I have it on 1600 and it looks great, but if you want space saving and are just playing games (e.g. colour replication doesn't need to be perfect {or close enough} then go for the TFT).
