Re: BT Infinity - anyone got it yet?

Last year, my area is said to get BT infinity at the end of the year. Checked in December and it got postponed to end of March. Checked in February, delayed to June... I dont have much faith that its coming to my area anytime soon. Anyone in the same boat?

To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

Other ISPs besides BT offer FTTC from their cabinets, it's technically the same thing.

About 200 metres, as the crow flies.

I would say if you can get BT Infinity in your area go for it, they have now removed the FUP! (300 GB per month fair usage cap), so no more penalties if you go over 300GB. They do traffic manage P2P file sharing (torrents) during peak hours, but you can always schedule your torrents to download off-peak. I think at £25.60p per month the price is right too. The speeds are great!

UPDATE: Apparently BT will continue to target heavy users on Infinity and use traffic management to throttle those they consider heavy users. If your considering Infinity check out their official user forums for updates on this ... http://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity/bd-p/BTInfinity

Hey mate. What else do the traffic manage? Torrents are a given, but what about stuff like http/ftp/fxp/usenet/nttp? And what is "peak hours" 8am to 5pm?

Must say I'm quite impressed by Infinity now, the first results I was seeing in its early days were unimpressive, with people getting nowhere near the quoted speed but it seems that's been resolved now.

Re: BT Infinity - anyone got it yet?

Officially the peak hours on infinity are 4 - midnight, but if you read the small print BT can apply traffic managment any time they consider the network busy.

    In the real world ...

Throttling on torrents is hard to measure and BT don't give out details, I've been told on BT forums for torrent downloads it's in effect 4pm - midnight,
for torrent uploads it's pretty much in effect 24/7 cutting upload speeds down to 1 Mbit/sec. I'm not that big on torrents so not particularly bothered by the traffic management.
The torrents I did try gave me around 24 Mbit down / 1 Mbit up during peak periods - off-peak I can hit 35 Mbit/s on torrents and that's fine with me.

Uploading large files via FTP to my web site I get around 3 to 4 Mbit upload speeds daytime, not tried off-peak (after midnight)

On NNTP it's brillant I'm on Astraweb, downloading from news servers I get around 25 Mbit/s during peak periods when the throttle is on,
off-peak (before 4 pm / or after midnight) with the throttle removed I get close to my full download speed around 37 Mbit/sec

Web surfing, streaming vids, youtube, BBC Iplayer, Itunes etc are all good too, no throttling

I take it the same applies to encrypted Usenet and Torrents?

I would love to be able to get infinity or cable, anything to increase my upload. I can just about stream 720p right now on my 1.2mb upload

if you use encryption torrents are still throttled, at least that's been my experience. There are a few torrent clients from Asia that can download torrents on port 80, but not much use unless you can find one modded for the english language.

If you want to download multiple torrents just schedule them for after midnight.

on Usenet I always use encryption on port 563

Not quite as bad as you. The availability date was originally quoted as March same time as the local exchange (Twyford). That has now changed to July.

Whether I trust that info is another matter. We're a long way from the exchange (0.5Mbit on ADSL!) in a small group of houses. I'll believe it when i see the cabinet installed.

Like others I hate the idea of using BT as an ISP because of their lousy customer service reputation. I'd like to find an alternative, sadly the best ISPs all seem to charge on a download volume basis. My download usage is quite high (and will probably go up with a faster service), so the cost hike would be substantial.

According to Inifinity website they still have no attention of installing it in my area. Despite all the new boxes now being fully installed and the engineers telling me that it is good to go . . . So i just went ahead and ordered a 12 month Be contract.
