I can't say I'm too enamoured with BTs service after they tries to charge a cancellation fee on what was actually an upgrade but I can't fault Infinity. BTs estimates seem to be pretty close to what you end up with and downtime has been minimal. Touch wood...

I would never contemplate giving them another pound of my money for any "upgrade" they are offering.

An estimated speed is supposed to be close to what you will actually get right? I've been ringing them up now for several weeks now, nagging them to come and fix the problem (it's not just the speed). I even had an engineer who came and tried to palm me off with a load of , telling me everything was fine. He said he'd fix "a circuit board" at the exchange - nothing actually got fixed.

Please don't waste your time and money with them.
I'm guessing you don't have any other options either? I'm dreading what speed I'll get when I move house as there is only BT available in that area.

BT Infinity and BT ADSL Broadband are two complete different products and technologies. You can not even begin to compare them.

I would highly recommend BT Infinity.
Even so, they are both BT. And why should I pay anymore to them if their general service is terrible? You might be getting great speeds from them, I'm glad someone does, but I'm just saying that I found that BT overall are a terrible company.

I'm guessing you don't have any other options either? I'm dreading what speed I'll get when I move house as there is only BT available in that area.
Yeah that's right, I just get the standard BT phone line, no fibre optic etc.

It really annoys me that they're now going for 80mb/s is it in some (limited) areas? Why can't they just make sure that the whole country can get something like 20mb/s at least before they start messing around?

Cant wait till BT infinity is available in our area , will be able to go with a better isp since BT is opening up their optic fibre cable infrastructure to other ISP's and get a better service and allowance, trouble is ill have to wait a long time since our village exchange doesn't even exist according to some exchange maps xD

Using fibre should mean speeds are much closer to the quoted upto speeds, so surely its worth trying to upgrade everyone to that than invest in old copper technology which was never designed for internet traffic.

Although I would say that as we were one of the first to have been upgraded to fibre

Finally got my upgrade date of 17th november - best of all Sky are not going to charge me any kind of termination fee (still got 3 months on my contract with them) - once I mentioned I was moving to infinity that was it.

Looking forward to it Good news that 80mb is coming too..and that it will work for most existing infinity cutomers too since it's just a change in how the signal is sent.

I don't think it is even a signal change, I think it is being restricted to 40Mb/s while the whole infrastructure is upgraded. But once the fibre is installed, there is little work to do to increase the speed. As always, the overall limitation is total backbone bandwidth.

How did you find out when the 80Mb/s "upgrade" will be available in your area?

I don't have BT infinity as such, but i'm on plus net and have upgraded to fibre (so I guess it's essentially the same thing, just difference in reseller).

today openreach guy came around to test and install the white fibre modem.

Speed takes a while to stabilize right?

    This was the best result:-

which is more than triple my last line anyways!

I'm happy with the speed I'm getting using talk talk fibre now, certainly better than the 2Mb/s we used to get here. It's just a shame the router they supply doesn't seem to be great as it's dropped the connection a few times.

Are they supplying a VDSL router? Or is it a router paired with a Huawei VDSL modem, BT-style?

I have not found out when - just that BT are going to upgrade almost all of their FTTC enabled cabs/exchanges to support 80mb/s. As mine is in a central manchester location, I am fairly confident it will happen in the next 12 months.

From wiki: This will be achieved by increasing ANFP spectrum usage to 17 MHz.

Bit of research shows that this makes sense..and also that it means that if you only get 30mb/40mb at the moment, your speeds should increase accordingly once 80mb is available.

Clearly this is all being done to compete directly with VM, so all 3 levels of BT's fast broadband will be faster than Virgin's offerings (24 vs 10, 40 vs 30, 80 vs 50, 110 vs 100).

Re: BT Infinity - anyone got it yet?

I arranged broadband with BT today, Infinity is not available (and probably won't be for a long time due to living in the sticks) I've got a horrible feeling it is going to be much slower than the estimated 7mb in the evenings.

I hope it isn't below 1mb at peak times. what is the upload speed supposed to be with BT broadband ?

Mounting the modem to the wall vertically, with the cable holes downwards, is meant to help a LOT with cooling (and being kicked offline) with older hardware revisions

That's how the BT engineer mounted my VDSL modem so obviously he knew what he was doing!
