    Dell Haggling.........

OK have finally got round to 'placing' my order with Dell, have specced up a Vostro 1500 with bits at £679 + VAT (free shipping atm)

Comes out at £799 inc VAT, spoke to a lady at Dell, specced it all up and sure enough was asked for my Visa Number, when I explained that I only had a budget of £700 I was greeted with the response that she didn't think I would get that much discount, but put me on hold for about 5 minutes, she then came back with the 'BEST' price of £749.

When I said that I couldn't go ahead with that she told me to take her ext and call her back when I was ready to proceed. I said not to worry as I could not possibly spend more than £700 and told her my card was waiting but I'd have to leave it. Surely a 6.25% discount is a bit low?

I've heard of 10, 20 30 % offers I guess I just wait now and see if they call back

I suspect they won't call back

... it could be regarded as taking the piss - since I'm confident that when it goes wrong you want all the support in the world and everything to be resolved.

Remember margins are there for several reasons - and don't think Dell make 000' of pounds per box...

Seriously - mebbe think if you want the support?

    LOL, thanks for the response.

I sell prestige cars for a living and If I wasnt happy to negociate a price then I'd rarely sell a car.
But do I give a lesser service to someone who got a better deal, of course not.

I have heard regularily of considerably better deals than I have been quoted, my reason for posting was to get a feel from other 'experiences' Hexus users had had whilst haggling with Dell.

I don't think people understand that support, service, advertising and infrastructure costs money - and if there isn't money in the operation the first thing to go is the support - and unfortunately that impacts us all as customers. Even though Dell is huge - this is still something which should be considered right?

So what is the average discount you give someone on the prestige cars - price point wise?

I.e if I find the cheapest dealer - and then come to you - you will beat the price?

I don't want to go totally off subject, but I see your point regarding service need to be paid for, BUT
I also see sensible discounts given in plenty of circumstances so why should I not at least try.

There are plenty of circumstances when I have seen a New car sold with no discount and plenty when I have seen the same car sold with a £2000 discount, it will depend on current market conditions, targets, as well as the negociating awareness/skill of the salesperson/customer.

I would like to get the BEST deal I can, that is all I am after, and any input I get is gracefully received

For a £700ish order I wouldn't expect much from them.

I manage a corporate account with them (spending £500k/year atm) and we get very well looked after. Example, PowerEdge 2950 with lots of bits added has a list price of about £8k but I can buy them in 1 offs at about £3.8k.

You may be able to get free stuff in addition to the order rather than a discount, worth asking.

Maybe the PC you specced was the Dell equivalent of a "Pre Reg", and there was no more dough left in it, and the discount they DID offer was more in way of trying to move another unit, than to simply reduce their margin.

I'd rather ask you another question: Can you get an equivalent PC, same components, and as wel built, from anyone else for similar money to the one Dell offered you?

Dell offer in this country what I see as equivalent PC specs as Audi/Saab/Volvo, but at Seat/Vauxhall/Renault money.

When Honda launched the Civic Type R, or when Mazda launched the RX-8, they were priced right, from the start, they were priced to sell. And they did. No discount at all, PX's valued a few hundred quid under normal SIV's, becuase they could get away with it. Fair play too. Sometimes retailers need to make a few quid somewhere (I'm sure you agree )

Same showroom, same salesperson, on a different model.....whole different story(Mazda 6, Honda FRV?) Maybe you chose a PC that just sells perfectly well anyway.

MAYBE you chose the right PC, one that's already priced well, priced right, priced competitively.

The more you spend the bigger the discounts. They don't do big discounts on cheaper laptops..never have.

You work in the trade/have freinds in trade?

No, that's not the point. I want a deal.

Didn't want free stuff, just a deal

In the end this happened 799 down to 749 down to 729 down to 709 at which point I bought.

What I really don't get is that if you read What car, Autocar, top gear etc etc etc the dealer gets beaten up and it's all good, BUT when I want a deal you (my fellow hexalites) all seem to feel sorry for the retailer.

10% discount is pretty standard with Dell and if I don't get that I probably would just cancel my order.

Good going on getting it down to £709 from £799 (Just over 12%, which is the absolutely maximum I have been able to get on any laptop). I find 10% a good balance to strike between effort and gain. Pretty easy to get so its quick.

    A happy ending..

    Or so you thought.. muhahahahaha

I'm being told by dell that i'm probably going to have to wait another 4 weeks ( on top of the 3 i waited already) to get my laptop due to a global glass shortage for the lcd screens.

..now where did I leave all that sand...its round here somewhere

P.S im pretty sure it won't affect you. The 1520's and vostros have been turning up fairly quickly.

Good going on getting it down to £709 from £799 (Just over 12%, which is the absolutely maximum I have been able to get on any laptop). I find 10% a good balance to strike between effort and gain. Pretty easy to get so its quick.
Thnx for that feedback, half of the pleasure of getting a deal is not the money (thats the ather half!!) it's knowing that you got a deal

Hope your XPS turns up soon

The nice lady said mine should be here nxt week (fingers crossed)
