Re: 24' moniter choices

I have the Samsung and its great, no issues whatsoever. My brother has the Dell and its fine too, many many inputs, but apart from that can't say I've noticed any difference. I wouldn't know what to look for really in terms of technical differences though, but as the average Joe both are good. And HUGE compared to my old 19"er

Re: 24' moniter choices

Dell do buy their panels from other manufacturers - but from what I read, the Dell panel is the more expensive type of panel compared to the Samsung 245B. This means there is better quality of image and a wider viewing angel. The Samsung uses a newer cheaper technology for its panel and therefore is cheaper, but the quality of the image may be worse. Just repeating what I have read elsewhere whilst looking for my own 24 TFT option. Personally leaning towards a Dell. Try googling - trusted reviews has some reviews of both TFT's.

Input lag is a consideration if you are a FPS gamer as is the quality of the electronics if you wish to avoid ghosting in films and games.
Its a real minefield choosing a TFT !
Backlighting is part of the panel, not independent of it. Also, dithering is an important part of most technologies we use, it's no con, it's an effective means of pushing out data faster, any 'loss' here isn't even perceivable to the human eye, you're more likely to mistake or miss colours by natural weakness to certain photon frequencies.

There's a lot of FUD reviews out there, written by clueless fanboys half the time. I'm not sure where you're getting this notion that 'Samsung panels are cheap, therefore of lesser quality' from, but it's simply not true. Samsung are 'cheap' (as in more affordable) because everything is 100% Samsung, they produce massive volumes, and thus no middleman to pay. Anyone I know who got a Samsung monitor never had anything to complain about, and we have two in the house to confirm it.

just because they both use samsung panels doesn't mean they are the same spec of panel though...
how does the viewing angle etc compare. to me that's a very important consideration

Re: 24' moniter choices

I find it unlikely that Samsung would give all their good quality panels to their competitors and leave the shabby ones for themselves.
160-170 degrees is good enough, unless you plan on viewing the monitor from your ceiling.

Hmm not really. What really matters is that you get a good screen and you don't spend the next few years, kicking yourself, every single time you use your PC... for spending hundreds of quid on something that looks like crap. Normally, I don't usually have a strong opinion on hardware stuff, but a bad monitor can be really terrible. My friend bought a PC worth well over £2000 and then got a crappy 22" Asus screen that looks horrible. So if you aren't careful, you can end up spending over 300 quid on a monitor that has looks horrible and can even have a fault like a bunch of dead pixels right in the middle of the screen, and you can't get a replacement. They will tell you, "Only 3 dead pixels? Oh well that within ISO specification". I know, cause I've been told that.

Suit yourself. If knowing if your screen is 6bit or 8bit is too technical and not welcome, then I'll leave you to it.

Re: 24' moniter choices

I didn't say Samsung are using a cheaper panel - I said a cheaper type of panel.

The Samsung uses a type of LCD panel known as a TN panel, rather than an S-PVA panel. The big advantage to TN panels is that they are far cheaper than S-PVA or S-IPS panels.

Obviously different types of panels result in different levels of picture quality such as reduced viewing angles, colour ranges, representation of colours etc. Before jumping on any monitor you may want to jump on to some forums. Theres a massive thread over on the Dell forum about ghosting issues with the new HC 24 inch panel.

if you opt for a 22" then it will easily be more 100pounds cheaper, if money is of any concern otherwise pretty much get anything you want... i have had my eye on the hp 22" glossy which is around 230 now and the 24 is 399
