    2.1 vs 5.1?

planning to get new speakers for around £100. i cant really decide whether to go with 2.1 or 5.1. At the moment i'm currently considering the Logitech z2300 and G51.

my primary uses will be gaming and a few movies.
please help me decide or recommend me any other alternatives

    thanks

personally i prefer 5.1 sound.. especially while gaming 'cause you get the feeling that you can hear exactly where people are..

btw, i have a set of Logitech X-540's and they're brilliant.. very similar to the G51's but in my opinion better looking

    Re: 2.1 vs 5.1?

If you have the means to position the speakers properly then 5.1 is great. I don't, so I just went for the z2300. They're fantastic for a 2.1 system, although the sub is stupidly powerful for a 1 room system, it's always on low

    Re: 2.1 vs 5.1?

Crazy, are these gonna be your primary speakers, or just your PC speakers?

I've got a 5.1 set of Creative Megaworks on my PC, they sound good but I hate them for the space they take and the clutter they create. With 2.1 setups, I tend to find the balance between the sub and the satellites is never quite right.

Have you considered 2.0? The reason I mention it is that I'm contemplating getting rid of my 5.1 and getting a 2.0 such as the GigaWorks T20 or T40, both of which have great reviews.

For gaming, I tend to find headphones are always best.

I did have 5.1, but i changed them because of having to place them right to appreciate them.
I do have 2.1 now which are great, as for gaming i often use headphones.

I use the GigaWorks T20 and they are brilliant. Apparently, the T40 are even a tick better. No cable clutter, much better then my old Logitec 5.1 system. For gaming I use my AGK headphones and if required I have a Logitech table microphone available.

    Re: 2.1 vs 5.1?

I go with 5.1speakers, but only because I can position them properly. when I couldn't I used medusa 5.1 headset. Just as good but sweaty ears

Forgot to say with the Medusa to go for the non usb ones. Mine are the phono ones and are great, but i've heard alot of bad things about the usb versions.

I just wish they'd make some affordable 5.1 wireless speakers. It'd be handy for most people, so you could stick the rear ones on your chair

    Re: 2.1 vs 5.1?

tbh they're mainly going to be used for gaming, and i don't mind going for headphones instead just need the right recommendations

i probably wont be able to set 5.1 properly (like rear satellites being behind me) because of the cable clutter

PC World do the GigaWorks T40's for £67.84 as a web exclusive, that's the cheapest I've seen them anywhere: Buy the Creative Gigaworks T40 Pc Speakers at cheap prices from PC World.

    Re: 2.1 vs 5.1?

I used to have a 5.1 speaker system with cables all over the place. When I moved house I just couldn't be chewed to set it up again so went for a 2.0 speaker setup. Creative do some excellent speaker sets as well as logitech.

Have to agree with Parm here on this one. I've got a set of gigaworks T20 and they are by far the best speakers I've had in a long time. Given that I have a small room and I did have some 5.1 speakers and then some 2.1 speakers also before that.

I loved my 5.1's but they just took up so much space, so I put them up in the loft and got the T20's. For 2.0 speakers they are excellent, gaming on them is good, and music play back is great, good levels of bass and trebble. They certainly produce enough thump to be felt around the house (wooden floors)

I got mine off ebay for half the retail price, for what I paid and the size of them I am very impressed with them indeed.
