PC Wont Turn On

I just got a new graphics card in the post, and I just put it in the PC... but now when I press the power button the PC only comes on for about a tenth of a second then shuts off again. Every 5 seconds or so, it turns itself back on then off.

I have taken out the graphics card, and the PC does the same when no graphics card is in it.

check all cabled connections. i.e. try removing them all and re-inserting, this will eradicate any possibility of a dodgey connection.

Done that. Right now I only have the motherboard, CPU and PSU connected. All hard drivers etc are disconnected.

No, same problem.

It may be a power supply issue. Does the graphics cars need an extra power connector or is your current PSU not providing enough power for the new card?

erm...

so the prob started when you plugged the gfx card in?

try checking over the whole system and making sure that there are no short circuits or anything.

also, as stupid and simple as it sounds. make sure you have the right power cable plugged in, the wall socket is switched on, and the psu switch is on. i spent an hour trying to diagnose that on mine (lots of power cables that arnt plugged in)

Ok I just did this:

Removed everything
New PSU
Only things plugged in: GFX, CPU, CPU fan

Turn PC on, CPU fan spins for about a tenth of a second then stops. Repeat every 5 seconds until I press the power switch on the PSU.

Edit: so we are down to either the CPU or the MB being broken?

try twisting the pci-e slot the gfx card went into, it may be (however unlikely) that when you put the card in the slot was loose and it has twisted and caused a short circuit

Take it outside the box and put it on something inert like a piece of cardboard. It sounds very like a short on the mobo.

Sounds like the same thing i had everything spins stop spins stops,now this was the motherboard on mine.I did flash the wrong BIOS on mine though.
Err which card was in before try that it could be the card.Its defo motherboard related i don't see how just putting the card in the pc though...unless static.

It's irrelevant as it wont POST even with no graphics card in it.

Right now I have this setup:

Anti-static motherboard wrapper with motherboard resting on top
PSU
Motherboard 24pin connected
Motherboard 8pin connected
CPU fan connected
1 Stick of RAM

Same problem.

I'm guessing that the motherboard is broken, maybe from static or something?

Could be a dead PSU. It's even possible that PSU has killed the mobo. You really need to try swapping the PSU then mobo to be sure.

But if it happened after putting in a new GFX card then there is a possibility that the mobo got damaged during this process. Did you have to use force to remove the old, or install the new, card? Have you done a visual check of the mobo to look for problem capacitors?

i think your main point of call now is a new mobo dude. unfortunate, but hey it has to happen eventually.
can you borrow 1 off a friend to make sure it is the mobo?
