I wouldn't mind if they pulled a rabbit out of the hat, but I am not expecting anything more than what we have seen last generation in terms of relative positioning (good bang for buck with features nVidia lacks). Have I missed any benchmarks though?

The 3870X2 was reasonably priced compared to the rest of the nV high-end cards despite beating them all out in performance. And AMD has always been fairly reasonable with their pricing. You can't compare historical ATi prices, AMD now owns and manages 'ATi' (which is merely a brand now, not a real entity).

Remember the AMD Althon 64 FX (I think that's the right name...), the old AMD competitor of Intels Extreme Edition, and it had the pricing to match it.

AMD would be in that price range if it could compete on raw performance, but at the moment it can't and has not been releasing products for the super high end for a while now, focusing on challenging Intel in the more reasonable price points.

Only thing I've seen is

and it's L'Inq, so take with a pinch of salt the size of Madagascar.

I'm not saying the above will happen, because I, like everyone else here, doesn't know what respective cost levels or market sizes are .... just that it might. Just because they're both running business doesn't mean charging less than the opposition isn't a sound business strategy. In fact, it's precisely because they're both running businesses that it is a sound strategy .... in the right circumstances.

Well, we can only speculate based on past history, which has shown us that whenever someone has the fastest item, its priced accordingly. When was the last time you paid less for more on a piece of PC hardware?

If the new ATI cards end up being noticeably cheaper then the new nVidia cards, you can be assured that they won't be performing in the same ballpark.

I doubt anything at all will change, different manufacturers will give better VFM depending on what performance point your looking at.

However nVIDIA seem sufficiently worried to have moved the 260 release to the same day as the ATi cards.

Both players are being very coy about dates and pricing - it's actually mildly exciting watching the various rumour sites try and catch up with the latest information, which is unusual so close to release.

If would be quite interesting if they can price the 4850 at about £150 (or less) if the numbers are reliable. And given the 3850's pricing on release, it might just be plausible (will have to see more proper benchmarks first though).

The competition between the two companies is finally sufficient to allow for price drops already (here), although this is obvisouly nothing concrete it seems that ATI really does have something that will be able to provide some good levels of competition and we should hopefully reap the benefits, or maybe already have.

Still waiting on some credible numbers but i'm definitely thinking this'll be closer in this round - nVidia might get the headline 'best' figure but i'm not sure they're going to look so rosy when you think about dollar per frame or power consumption (and therefore heat).

I don't mind which does it - but I have to say it'd be good for nVidia to get a bit of a proverbial kick up the bum after so long on top (and some lazy designs as a result).

I'm in the market for a new card this summer though..

if ATI's offering is £350 mark and nvidia is £500+(by the looksi of it) and that ATI's one is maybe 10-20% slower the NVIDIA which would you get?

350 is circa what i paid for the 8800gtx - i wouldn't go beyond that for card in all honesty (well unless i have a moment of madness).
It's all about the performance numbers though...

Ye nVidia reduced their prices by about $200 to ensure they can compete atleast
