I highly doubt the CPU is holding the GFX back... since when is the CPU a major part of a gaming platform? Games depend heavily on graphics cards to perform the calculations required with lessor tasks being done by the CPU. Its often that the CPU is under used in game coding and unless they have found some way to tweak the current games to rely on the CPU more than what all other tests indicate that assumption is highly suspect.

Also in that thread it is pointed out the highly suspect scores given for the respective games, I mean my 8800GTS is heavily overclocked and so is my CPU. Possibly to the point that my system should beat there standard E8400 and 8800GTS yet they report frame rates higher than my average frame rates with MUCH higher settings, how is that possible? I only get 31-34FPS in crysis with 3 settings on medium(texture, volumetric & game effects) and the others only on high not anywhere near maximum and certainly WITHOUT AA of any sort so its highly improbable that they could possibly have come to those readings through testing.

I don't believe any of the reports tbh and am holding my judgement on the new series of GFX cards until they are released and proper reviews are completed.

I believe that games relied more so on the GPU back then than they currently do and the CPU was even less useful then in gaming than what they are today so with less for the CPU to do with games coding how could it be a bottleneck back then?

Maybe I'm wrong with my view of how games code uses the computer but I haven't seen any evidence that CPU's are heavily used during games and in fact have found out(through experience) that overclocking a CPU doesn't yield all that much improvement in games like it does with windows and other applications. I only got around 3-5FPS difference overclocking from 2333Mhz to 3360Mhz so CPU being a bottleneck with games to me is highly unlikely.

Absolutely overkill. Not many people would spend that much on a component to have it outdated in a few months by another top end rebrand or OC.. surely?

The top end GFX cards are usually aimed at a niche market and never reach high volumes. I would pay the price if it's significantly faster at 1920x1200 which initial tests seem to indicate that it is. If something significantly faster comes along in 6 months then I'll upgrade to that. It is smart to do so? No, but then I spend enough time gaming to justify it (to myself). My 8800GTX simply doesn't do the job any more.

It gets 34fps at 1900x1200 at high settings, which is pretty good. (See the Gtx 280 benchmark thread in graphics and monitors sub-forum)

haha this poor. just like early reviews have posted. this card is just another refesh, IF THAT because a single GX2 BEATS i repeat BEATS a 280 LOL shockingly bad. what a time for ATI to come back strong.

Comparing it to a 9800GX2 is silly, you are comparing 1 gpu to 2 gpus....

Its still under-performing for what I wanted/expected though and I doubt ATI will do better.

We tried playing Crysis at 1600x1200 NoAA/16X AF with everything on “VeryHigh” and it WAS NOT playable on the BFGTech GeForce GTX 280 OC. This card is immense..

You are forgetting that the GTX will only get stronger in time.

Also, you can't compare it to a 9800 GX2 because that is two cards in one.

So the GTX280 is twice as fast as a 9800 GX2 / card and in my books that is very impressive.

Common sense says wait until ATI's card launch - not only to see what they're like by comparison but because they'll probably drive nVidia prices down if they're close enough in figures. I'm not playing anything that's need the extra power just yet either - so until Crysis part II i'm sorted.

I'd be most curious to see what a 4870x2 did and for how much cash

My logic says that the comparison to the GX2 is warranted because the GX2 is in fact cheaper than the GTX280 which then makes it is a much better choice for purchase because of similar performance and nearly £150 less in price.

In terms of 9/8800GTX comparison the GTX280 is by all means a triumph and FAR better.
