Prefetch is a folder in the windows directory that windows looks into when it starts up. The prefetch folder is a cache of recently opened applications etc, and the bigger the prefetch the longer windows takes to load. It is located at C:/windows/prefetch and I believe that all the contents can be safely deleted, but please check with someone else first as I'm not entirely sure.

You can delete it as over time it accumulates caches that it doesn't need, however the idea is to speed up common program launches.
    PHP Code:

hmmm I'll have to have a look... never heard of that one... thanks.
Doubt it will make much differance though as I have a pretty much clean install on.............

(just looked in my work computer: a win98 machine, can't find it - I guess win98 didn't use it?)

I only have 4.69MB in there - will it actually make that much difference?

AFAIK, the prefetch is supposely to speed up the startup process, and ironicly it is slowing it down....

my prefetch is also ~5mb, ive just moved the entire folder to some place else *just* in case things go 'wrong', u know how windows is

I'm sure somthing is wrong with my win2000...

It boots POST etc pretty quick, it starts windows - this takes several seconds- then it prepares network connections-couple more seconds-then it just goes to the pale blue screen for several more seconds (seems longer) before flashing the automatic logon (admin) for a second and then starting.... this takes at least 60secs..

Can any one give me advice?

    Who else has windows 2000???

That's rather ironic, poindextermatic - I formatted and reinstalled my Windows 2000 three weeks ago. Start up was lightning fast, even after installing SP4 and all my drivers. Then I visited Windows Update and updated everything it suggested. Now, after I enter my password in the logon screen and the little status window goes away, harddrive activity continues for a few seconds, then stops for about 30 seconds, and then Explorer loads. In that 30 second gap, absolutely nothing seems to happen. Probably gonna reinstall Windows again sometime soon and install updates one by one to try find the cause. :/

That sounds about right! Mine was pretty quick when I did a fresh install too if I remember correctly... damn tonne of MS updates!
You can't uninstall them updates though can you?
