It takes me 50sec to boot into XP and then programs load for around a minute after I can see my taskbar. Oddly enough my ram usage is 650meg upon boot-up and goes up to 1050M after a few of my P2P programs kick on.

Anyway I only reboot once every 2 weeks so the reboot time doesn't matter much to me.

Me too found it very odd. When I did a fresh install a few months ago, right after I installed all the drivers and reboot, I get 550M used at startup. It just get worse.

Mine takes around a minute from cold boot to usable desktop - which is a lot longer than many of the times stated on here. I defintely haven't got a slow machine according to the spec! Once Windows loads to the desktop (around 45 seconds), my machine is then busy for a further 15-20 seconds before disk activity stops. That's with XP Pro SP2. I keep my machine very clean by running Active@ ZDelete, Registry Mechanic and Diskeeper Pro regularly. Nothing in my Startup folder, and a few bits in the Windows 'RunOnce' section of the Registry (ATi cli, Kaspersky AV, and a few others but nothing that I don't expect).

Same here, even a fresh install of win2000 takes a minute to load, maybe just under.
My sysem is also not slow: AMD 64 3200, NeoPlat2 board with bios V1.5 and a Maxtor 80GB drive.
Maybe its the HDD that is the key?

It wasn't really a problem but now I know people are getting between 10 and 40 sec boot up to windows I want to know what is slow in my machine.

And its more like 1:20 when I have all my firewall and other stuff on.

Just timed mine. 1 minute 4 seconds to XP password prompt... Another 1 minute 2 seconds after that for it to become usable

My dad's PC takes ages... It usually BSODs and resets once in Windows when starting from cold... It needs to do this about 2 or 3 times before it becomes usable. We just let it do it's thing

Timed mine it takes 38 seconds to the password prompt
After entering the password, it loads up AVG & Sygate, and is usable within 3 secs.
    This is in Win XP.

On earlier OS, it should be much faster, when I was on Win ME, i used to get to my desktop in about 20 secs.

Type msconfig in the run command, and click on the startup tab, and see what processes it loads. You should keep these to a minimum of 2. Your Anti-virus & Firewall processes.

Edit bios settings for quick mem test & also disable the Intel logo, if given the option & make sure your first boot device is your hard drive.

And run spybot s&d, incase you got spyware, which sloooooows down your pc alot.

And keep your desktop clean & plain as possible, i use windows default screen appearance.
