I'm stunned and very impressed at some of the times quoted on here. I've just retimed mine using a stopwatch (I know, I know it's sad...) from power on to *usable* desktop (i.e. when the HDD activity stops). It actually took around 1 minute 20 seconds. Hence, I am stunned that some PC's are going to the desktop in under 20 seconds.

The strange thing with my PC is that the BIOS screens take around 20 seconds on their own!

Otherway round for me. Fresh install boots in the time it takes you to say "LOL INTERNETS" but once you start installing stuff it slows right down

Yeah that's what I don't understand (are they taking the p|$$ or what?) mine only starts loading windows after about 10-15secs.

Have just reinstalled windows (fresh & formatted) installed SP4 for win2000 and put my firewall on.... takes 60sec from push of button till everything is loaded and the HDD stops activity!!

I really can't believe people get less than half a min!

It's mainly to do with what setups people have. I have a A64 mechine, with a gig of ram, and I keep my pc as clean as possible. So this could have to do with it.

And i always get stupidly slow booting with a fresh install. But i don't have anything at startup (3rd party software) except the Creative MediaSource. Also disabled like half of Windows services.

I be about 30secs to logon and 40secs for HDD to stop after logging on. Mind you, my logon one could be reduced if I removed all the desktop crap I need to sort out, defraged once in a while, sorted out everything! (XP Pro).

How do you bring yourselves to do clean installs, there's nothing more I hate than that (except perhaps a dead HDD).

Clean install = easy and quick, you can even do it while watching the TV! (or whatever else )

Well, after a fair bit of research on the web and some extensive tweaking I have got my (clean install + firewall + a few other bits) 1 min boot reduced to 40sec . I guess to get anything less I will need a better HDD, as I think this is whats slowing my system, but this is fairly good!

    Cheers for help.

Takes about 1min to be totally done, on XP Pro. Use to be quicker, and probably will when I get a new HD and RAM .

I upgraded my disk from 5400rpm to 10,000rpm ... and the boot time went up. Windows loads about 15s faster but it takes longer than that for the SATA controller to initialize.

This PC takes dead on 60secs to get to the P/word promt (i mesured it to be 59.89sec)
    - From hitting enter from the log on screen, about 30secs if logging on localy, but about 90 if im logging onto the domain (about 3mins if the server is off)
