My SCSI controller takes AGES to detect my SCSI drives and I'm adding in a Vapochill soon which will push it up further. The actual booting of Windows is pretty quick tho, probably 20 seconds from the SCSI controller finishing off what its doing to being sat at the desktop with all my stuff (Outlook 2003, Bit Spirit, Klient, MSN Messenger, etc) loaded and ready to go.

My old Xeon machine was very very fast at booting up, SMP really seems to help since lots of stuff is initialising all at once.

Timed it last night. 29 seconds from switch on to "ready to play Viet Cong".

Deleting everything out of prefetch yielded a 1 second advantage.

My home installs old... so takes about 45 seconds...

My work PC takes about 2 - but then it's left in hibernate From cold, it bizaarely takes about 2mins - with about half that on a blank screen, with no hdd access. Probably some corporate nonsense stuff.
Now go away before I taunt you a second time.

    29secs!!

    This must be due to:

    a) Your 10k SATA
    b) WindowsXP

    2 things I don't have!

60 seconds? when I had a domain it used to let me login to it and all programs etc for the account would be loaded within about 10 seconds, does it stay on the bit after you enter the username and password for the 60 seconds? was actually quicker for logging onto the domain than the local account :S

I can heartily recommend SATA Raptors. Nice and swift and while my rig actually sits inside an old wooden wine rack (rather than a case), the SATA was so much easier to fit than the crappy IDE slugs that hold the bulk data.

only problem : my 36Gig SATA was more expensive than all of my IDE warehouses put together. And at 36Gig, I probably won't have the space to be able to upgrade to the next version of windows bloatware!

It spends (proberble more than 60secs) "appliying personal" setting etc

    - I keep meaning to sort it, but i havnt time atm, so it just wont get used
    - Also, no i havvnt got roaming profiles set up.

No problems - though it looks like an explosion in a Dabs warehouse so don't go expecting anything beautiful. I wanted to make it look like an old Victorian scientific instrument...the practicalities of short, fat cables intruded and ... well, I'll grab a photo and you can see.

(Still, it's the only wine rack i know of with an AMD FX sticker on it.)

IIRC my machine boots in about 15-20 seconds depending which soundcard i have enabled (soundstorm or Audigy) and the xp loading "bar" goes across the screen twice before the desktop appears..
    ahhh, raptor raid 0

Domain logon kinda slows me down, so probably about 35 seconds depending on how fast I type password.
