    Re: * Star Citizen *

I know this thread is about Star Citizen but since there's been some discussion of Elite too, take a look at the latest Dev Diary. The internal and external details of the Coriolis space station are just stunning. I love the way they give so much consideration to the technical details too, such as locating the luxury accommodation on the outside of the station, where gravity would be strongest.

I've dropped £300 or so into this game.

For me it represents hope for the hard core PC gamer, and a big F YOU to the likes of EA who constantly drip feed mediocre games.

We reached 41 million. And that means:

"Procedural Generation R&D Team – This stretch goal will allocate funding for Cloud Imperium to develop procedural generation technology for future iterations of Star Citizen. Advanced procedural generation will be necessary for creating entire planets worth of exploration and development content. A special strike team of procedural generation-oriented developers will be assembled to make this technology a reality."

    2015 some time, I believe.

The list of games I'm waiting on grows ever larger, though... SC, Elite, WatchDogs...

well we have the dog fighting module coming out in april then other modules throughout the year. they originally stated that the game will be out early 2015. i have a feeling that we'll probably get the squadron 42 campaign by that point. but the persistent universe might still be in beta around then. but im not basing this on anything other than the impression i get from following this game since january..

2015 is optimistic, if you're familiar with Roberts history of game development

This stretch goal will allocate funding for Cloud Imperium to develop procedural generation technology for future iterations of Star Citizen
Funding for this game is going towards future games?

Wish they'd just stick to the core Wing Commander update, and then separately the Freelancer update. Keep the FPS out of it!

haha yeh well a lot of people think it'll be 2016

and what that means is that star citizen is an ongoing project. so the first release may not have procedurally rendered planets. but it will eventually be included and personally - i love the fact that this is also a first person shooter! the ship boardings might just be amazingly fun! and exploring planets will be really cool as well

well this game is never finished. and not in the battlefield 4 way lol... but it's an ongoing project. procedural generation was only ever to be in the game if and when 41 million in funding was reached. and i'm pretty sure that, that stretch goal was only decided upon within the last couple of months! so the game isn't unfinished Per se, if it is released without this feature. but it's something to look forward to later

you will have your space combat game i doubt you'll have to spend much time at all with the first person shooter stuff. i mean, the only time it can really be used in space is when you're boarding another ship/being boarded. the rest of it will probably take place in situations you don't need to be in. i'm sure you can spend your time flying around just fine! but if it's not your thing, then it's not your thing. i understand. i know there are others who're also concerned that it will somewhat ruin the game.

Indeed, it was a reaction to Eliteangerous

so the game isn't unfinished Per se, if it is released without this feature. but it's something to look forward to later
Hmm if it's a good feature then perhaps I should wait for it before buying the game

Absolutely - it's taking valuable dev time and resources away from the core game.

i just had to lookup that guy to see what you were on about! a game called "line of defense" by any chance? looks a bit like planetside 2!
A game? hehe Look up Battlecruiser 3000AD and Universal Combat. etc. Most of his games are basically space 'simulators' with FPS ground etc. combat. And they're disasters IMHO - try to be too many things at once.

yeh by all means, do that! it's not often i back unfinished games myself. i prefer to see reviews and gameplay videos first. because i've been burned too many times before with games that didn't deliver. i sometimes think that star citizen is so ambitious, that it might not be possible to pull it off without a lot more time and a lot more money. but i'm already strapped in for the ride now. and i'm looking forward to seeing it unfold

Absolutely - it's taking valuable dev time and resources away from the core game.
i'll save my judgement on that for a later date

yeh i just looked up some more of his games, including the ones you mentioned. i didn't see any space stuff in the videos i watched. but yeh, those games look kinda dated and crappy. but not everyone is gonna be able to pull it off! i think this is the start of a new era of games. moving beyond them being so specific in what they do. it's exciting, yet worrying. i don't want to get too into these things haha...

    Nope.
Funding not used to get the final release launched is (supposedly) paying for server maintenance, updates, admin & policing, new maps, new planets, new ships and all the other stuff that we'd otherwise each have to pay for as DLC, or similar.

I like the idea of updates and new bits, as it skirts around the whole DLC idea. There will be people will continue to pay in real money, be it new game sales or add-ons and general purchase of in-game currency, merchandise, or whatever. Those payments will effectively fund the RSI alternative to DLC and for those of us who are poor and can't afford to buy a fleet of Idrises, we actually get it for free!

    Play Elite, then.
There's a few others coming out that are pure space-sim and/or space combat.
Apparently over 60% of people voted for a PvE/Exploration game, rather than yet another space combat deal.

I think this is more Freelancer than Wing Co anyway. FL really needed a cockpit view to begin with, but was let down by the cinematic story cut-scenes instead of being able to explore planets first person. SC looks to be correcting that.

PvE/exploration is part of a space combat game in most cases, the two aren't mutually exclusive.

Quite ironic that you suggest Elite as an alternative to PvE/Exploration - Elite is way more about that than the WC games have ever been.

It's both. The vote between the two wasn't clear cut as most people wanted both. In my case, I wanted both separately, rather than as one game from the outside, but as long as SC isn't just a tutorial to the freelancer game then I'm probably OK with that. It's the FPS stuff I object to the most.

I don't recall much trading/mining/exploration in the likes of Freespace, Starlancer, etc and most "space-sim" games of late seem to be the Star Conflict type, either PvP or PvE but always outright combat.

I never got to play Elite as it would always load-stall partway into the cassette... but isn't that also combat-centric?

My only hope is that I can switch between FPS and TPS (Mass Effect fan, y'see).
But I like the idea of going all in one - Freelancer, Dark Star One, et al got boring because you could travel to all these millions of planets, yet the only real differences were sky colour, a few commodities and a slightly different spaceport seen from inside the same cockpit. It didn't feel as immersive because you coudln't get out and stretch your legs.

I expect SC likely will be the PU tutorial, just like Freelancer. The benefit here is that it's skippable.

No. I mean, if you wanted, you could play a pirate, or bounty hunter or missions etc. (in later versions), but at it's heart for me it was a trading game - buy low, sell high. Finding markets for your commodities, making trade runs, nicking the cargo from other ships if you wanted or just mining space resources and selling them.

Privateer was much the same, and Freelancer, and games like the X series to a greater extend. Most space combat games have also had major trade and exploration sides.

It didn't feel as immersive because you coudln't get out and stretch your legs.
Just look at X:rebirth to see how adding 'stretching your legs' can ruin a game. Ditto Universal Combat et al.

I expect SC likely will be the PU tutorial, just like Freelancer. The benefit here is that it's skippable.
For those who just want the multiplayer side of things, sure. But some of us wanted a wing commander replacement too, not a skippable tutorial
