In the internets, no one can hear you sarcasm.
Thanks for the feedback fellas, especially gav.
Gav - while I apreciate the viewpoint on having a diverse focal point - and I'd have been delighted to introduce a ladybird had one been walking past at the time - I have a real interest in layout, composition and shapes, without particularly bothering with meaning or context. This scene really caught my eye just because of how the leaf curved and presented itself from the surroundings - it's a really stunning line IMO. The DOF was supposed to bring it out, and the flawless bokeh was just added bonus.
I understand your perspective on the shot, and everyone loves those National Geographic style pictures, but I'm pretty happy with it. The fact that I only had two minutes to test the lens, and the fact the shot was taken literally two feet from my front door is an added bonus
Virtual - it's a beautiful lens, and pretty cracking for portraits as well (although I bought a 200mm f2.8 at the same time, and that's so sharp it's hard to put down). I really recommend it, macros are great fun.
I picked this on up for £325 including postage second hand. It's a great copy, mint condition.

I,m about to buy a macro too but having difficulty deciding between the canon 100 or sigma 105. Both seem to give good results but canon is about 100 quid dearer and with that 100 I could buy a set of ,Kenco's'.
30mm f/1.4 wide open
not sure you quite nailed the focus (or could be because the exposure on the face is off)

I really must try photographing something/one else
Edit: Now Im looking It looks a bit underexposed too
It's a difficult shot exposure-wise since you have the extremely bright outside in the window and the comparitively dark inside/cat's face. If you have some sort of image editing program (GIMP is very good and free), it might be worth applying a gradient that brightens the right side of the photo and darkens the left a little
Lovely photography weather lately!

syd have you got a reflector? It would have worked wonders there, or maybe a bit of fill flash?
I ageee with VM, its a difficult shot to expose for but I would have sacrificed some of the highlights to get the cat better exposed (easier to say than do on the fly)
