The lighting is also great in your photos. I'm beginning to wish I had bought a serious camera now instead of the Lumix FZ-18 I got. The 18x optical zoom is great, but I am no longer using the auto features after only 3 weeks, and the sensor is £*$%, at mid and high ISO levels the amount of noise is appalling. Are there any decent SLRs to be had for around £400? What sort of money should I be thinking about spending for a few decent lenses?

nothing wrong with that, in fact compact lenses tend to be better than lower end slr lenses since they are build specifically for that camera.
