Cannabis possession is as "bad" as rape? Are you serious?

Regarding your point about children disregarding the law. I suggest you read "The Culture of Fear" by Barry Glassner. This is a popular myth and utterly untrue. Juvenile crime has been steadily decreasing for decades.

I'm not saying that drug possesors should be dealt with as harshly as rapists, I'm saying that they have both comitted a crime and therefore should both be punished. Now the punishment should be dependant on the level of crime.

My god man, stop reading books and look around you. It is certainly NOT decreasing! Jeez, I invite you please to come around my area... it's supposed to be quite nice, quite quiet, but if you knew what the kids round here got up to then you'd be in for a shock! I also invite you to try and walk down Feltham high street at night and survive without getting your legs broken, and yes I'm talking about gangs of kids. They're untouchable. Police won't do a thing/can't do a thing.

Sorry, but this is absurd. How can you know better than national statistics?

I don't give a f**k about national statistics that can be made up to please the population. I see what I see and I make my OWN statistics up. And in this area it's NOT decreasing, it's INCREASING.

As I said, stop reading books and papers and look around at whats heppening. If it's improving in your area then great, coz it's not everywhere else!

I agree with Big Al, its increasing, and thats a bad thing.

In my old secondary school i knew 2 people who sold weed and LSD during lunch. I found out that they sold drugs when i was in year 11, when they offered it to me.

I have no clue how long they had been dealing. I welcome this new move by goverment.

FFS, ok HERE. It's not improving HERE!

I wasn't talking about the whole bloody country, I was talking about the area surrounding me (Ashford, Staines, Feltham, Egham, Kingston, Heathrow), the areas where my families live (Bedford, Hull, Devon, East Sussex) and the areas where my friends live (Uxbridge, Weybridge, areas listed above)! In nearly ALL those areas youth crime is on the increase so don't give me that government BS!

Are you done trying to prove me wrong now? I have provided substantial proof that in the majority of places I know it's on the increase and others probably will to. So I generalised, so what? We all do it!

surely we have to look beyond the fact that kids do drugs when refering to crime stats. its the cause of the crime that's the main factor e.g. kids having nothing to do on nights, lack of interesting ("ooh yeh, chess club wahey!") activities to do etc..
plus, how many stoned kids could be arsed to give someone a good kicking?! i know a lot of pot smokers and the most agressive they get is when the guy in the kebab shop takes ages with their food!
where i live, the kids are generally alright. its not the best of areas, but it's by no means the worst. true, we do tend to hang around on the streets, but only cos there's nothing better to do unless you spend money, which most of us lack. and staying in is just boring. a load of teenage kids come into my work (chippy) on a fri and sat night. they play football round the back on the carpark, and most of them are rather stoned too. they never cause any trouble, they look like rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishrubbish but are polite, friendly and generally nice kids.
Al - it sounds like you're unlucky and live in a sh*thole. you can't generalise on the behaviour of young people nationwide just because you've had bad experiences in your area. instead of moaning about it, how about putting some ideas forward to the youth service from the local council, and actually getting off your arse away from your computer and do something to help disadvantaged youngsters instead of putting them down.
    peace.

*** EDIT ***. If you cant be nice and debate without insulting each other, dont post here.

Again, I'm being flamed... well sod it, I might as well nick a car, speed, do drugs, hang around on street corners, leave my job and stop paying taxes.... perhaps then I'll get a bit of respect!

i am not insulted in anyway, so i bet that pissed on your bonfire.

i don't see why i should stop smoking it, its a lot better for me than alcohol.i enjoy the effects more than i do from drinking. it helps me concentrate, makes me more creative and sociable. alcohol just messes me up. do you drink? have you seen the anti-social effects of drink? well then...

and as for the job comment - i'm at college full time doing A-levels. i work there to get a bit extra cash. its easy and i get paid lots. plus, if i stopped working there, and everyone else left jobs which you wouldn't call 'proper', then a large section of uk business would collapse. jobs need doing, and i'm more than happy to work there. also, do you have any idea how hard it is to get a decent part-time job nowadays?! there is no way i could earn what i do, for the amount of work i do anywhere else.

i have every right to tell you what to do. moaning about problems but never doing anything to help rectify them is pathetic, and seeing as your head is rammed so far up your arse you need all the help and encouragement you can get to rectify this problem.

    peace.

The effect of cannabis varies from person to person, same goes for alcohol.

In my opinion, there are 2 types of cannabis smoker, the relaxed one, and the violent one. The most common around here (Brixton, Stockwell, Camberwell, Peckham) is the Violent one.

Different people smoke cannabis for different reasons, but nothing good can be gained through smoking cannabis. It DOES harm your body and it damages your pockets if you know what I mean.

Its weird how only the cannabis smokers speak of how good it is for them, same with cigarette smokers. They always give these BS excuses of how it helps them calm their nerves and helps then concentrate.
It makes me wonder how the hell they could of survived before smoking it.

And cannabis is addictive, no matter what any of u cannabis smokers say. I know it is, from experiences. Also, I recommend some people read a book titled "Go Ask Alice" it’s a true story.

Err, no you don't have the right to tell me that. I've already had a hard few years helping friends go through drug problems and I know what it's like to deal with kids on the streets, I see them every day and I have to deal with them in my own town.

So why is it down to ME to rectify these problems? What can I do about it? Why aren't I allowed to moan about things that are getting out of hand coz the people who are supposed to be doing things aren't? Why should I do anything?

I think this thread has strayed well away from the real issue and into to your personal feelings on people that smoke cannabis.

I smoke, both legal and illegal substances. I see no wrong in what i do, i have purposfully harmed someone while stoned. You may be speaking from your own experiences but your not exactly looking at them in an un biased way are you?

"Its weird how only the cannabis smokers speak of how good it is for them, same with cigarette smokers. They always give these BS excuses of how it helps them calm their nerves and helps then concentrate.
It makes me wonder how the hell they could of survived before smoking it"

You say that only smokers speak about the plus sides of smoking..........How is anyone but a smoker able to comment on the positive affects of smoking???, someone who has never smoked a spliff in they're life is in no way qualified imo to speak out on how it affects your state of mind based on anything but stereotypes or past experience. In my experience smoking normal ciggarettes does calm me down, and its not only me that has noticed this, im now more chilled out than i was and not as quick to anger.

Deluded, you speak of there being two kinds of stoner, i have never met a violent stoner, ever stop to think that maybe they were under the influence of something more than cannabis? How many of you that see kids on street corners know EXACTLY what they have taken/drunk? In my experience drunk scallies are far more violent and abusive than those who've just had a spliff. The two drugs have very different effects.

I suggest that before you flame me for arguing with you that both of you rethink your argument as what i've seen so far seems to be alot of stereotypical biased evidence.

True, there are some posts in this thread that are coming very close to personal insults. I've just made a valid argument there without having to * out words and without insulting anyone. You guys need to calm down before you reply.

I won't flame you for posting your thoughts, you have posted maturely and calmly (unlike others, and myself).

I have smoked cannabis before (on a regular basis when I was younger - much to my regret I must say) so I feel I am qualified to talk about this. I had a good friend who got very violent only whilst smoking cannabis and I've known others to get violent too. I'm not saying that all people are violent when smoking, but the same goes for alcohol. Not all people who drink alcohol get violent either.

I'm not stereotypical, I see what goes on around me and make my own judgements based upon that. Most of you won't be able to agree with me or see where I come from because you don't see what I do, but it doesn't mean that the problem is not there just because the lying media says it's not!
