Yeah, well I love meat too, the point is that we can survive without it and consequently there's no justification for keeping animals in inhumane conditions just to keep us eating tasty food. If you raise and kill animals humanely then IMO there's nothing immoral about that; keeping them cooped up in small, dirty sheds is inhumane and consequently is immoral IMO.

It all goes back to the point which Richie quoted from the other thread: since eating meat is not actually necessary, by factory farming animals we are just as guilty of causing unnecessary animal suffering as fox hunters are. My logical conclusion from that is: since people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, we shouldn't ban fox hunting unless we're prepared to ban factory farming at the same time.

Better off hunting politicians. Then we wouldn't have some ****** from the inner city of Manchester, whose greatest understanding of the countryside probably comes from watching an episode of Emmerdale, telling people in a rural society how to live.

Or, conversely, some other ****** from the landed/monied rural gentry killing off public services because he's rich enough to afford private healthcare, education and doesn't EVERYONE have an SUV anyway?

Mate, I live in the country and said landed gentry are a pain in the ar*e. Because it would 'spoil the the look of the village' we don't have streetlighting. By the time the cops come out you will have probably died of natural causes. I think we have the most expensive bin bags in UK. Don't get anything else for £2000 of council tax. Oh, and I HATE Chelsea tractors. Driven by people too fat to get into real cars. Got a nice view though and not many chavs.

But I still resent the fact that animal welfare/rights are being used by government in a cynical cover up for getting revenge for a very old score. Namely, the miners strike. Some of Labours voters (and probably members too) aren't even old enough to remember that chapter in our colourful history. Given that there are many more much higher pressing issues facing this country. Why has this got such a high priority? Would it be to garner votes for the next election.....hmmm? Bearing in mind that the people who will be hardest hit by this legislation would never vote for Blair and his cronies in this life or the next.

Is it just me or is there something rather ironic about a meat eater arguing how cruel meat eating is and a vegan arguing in contrast that just because one eats meat it doesn't mean they are not concerned with animal welfare.

Sorry Rich, my mistake, I should have made it clear as I was refering to the link in the debate over on overclockers.

They have a meat eater there who is going on about how cruel it is to eat meat and a vegan who in contrast is arguing that one can eat meat and care about animal welfare.
