I didnt have to on mine but I guess it would depend on where the button is located on the drive and the shape / size of the button as it will differ from drive to drive.

My dvd burner is an NEC AD7173. Its placing is correct.
What kind of burner do you have?
I don't understand why to remove the front panel.

I have to check for the exact number ....
But I thought this was the only possibility if you want to keep the panel covering the dvd drive (original one) in place...

Question Which video card for dvi

    Hi,
I bought a Dell 2007FP display, but with VGA analog it is a bit of ghosty.
Yesterday I tried with a Saphire VGA card which have DVI inteface, the result was perfect with digital connection (for my success).

Would you suggest me something good but cheap card with DVI?
I no use my configuration for gaming or video rendering, I use this only for business development, so the performance is not important, just it is able to manage 1600x1200 display size, and of course the card have enough space to align in Asus T3.

    Thanks for your help!
    Regards,

The Inquirer are talking about new G965 drivers that improve gaming:
    http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=40433

I can only find drivers from end of April.

Can anyone see where these new drivers are that now support T&L ?

Can anyone get speedfan to run with this mobo? My system runs quite hot, Hard drives @ 50-54 even at idle!

    Hello,

Asus has posted a beta 0610 BIOS under the T3-P5G965 section on the 29th, but unfortunate for everyone that wants to try it out -- they typo'd the model number inside the ROM file, so EZFlash or Asus Update errors out saying that this ROM file won't match the board. They don't appear to have a changelog posted either.

    !

    Also, I suffer the DDR2-800 bug as well -- I have four mushkin 1GB DDR2-800 5-5-5-12, 1.8V.

It's also worth mentioning that the does DOES detect as DDR2-800 on a fresh boot, ie after you deep-six the CMOS by yanking power and coin-cell batt. Any subsequent boot after that, for some reason BIOS continues to tag it as DDR2-667

Here's some pictures of the innards of my T3 setup -- however, it appears that since I'm a nooblet here, I can't post URLs. All files are at krhainos.tk/asusinside

IMG_0315.JPG -- you can see I took the mobo 24-pin power and routed it under the ram, coiled around it are the video card 6-pin power and the 12v 4-pin power. SATA, and other cabls are ziptied along the way. There are fans to get some airflow across the two drives and the northbridge. The USB hub at the top has my two flash drives and a Toshiba Bluetooth adapter that's flush against the blank plastic area above the audio ports.

IMG_0316.JPG - it's a tight squeeze, but with some luck and elbow grease, you can use the original SATA power connectors from the Antec power supply -- you can only use the 90-degree angled ones here because of the space restriction.

IMG_0318.JPG- closeup of the cable situation at the top, along with my "built in" Wi-Fi

IMG_0319.JPG - I also rerouted the excess power cables under the little area between the vid card and the slot and ran them flush against the motherboard, bundled them up at the top. The rest of the cable is bundled u in the lower left corner of the case in this pic. This way, the cables aren't choking those convinient air holes in the back.

Those pictures are a bit old; I've removed the two fans on the front, and the one on the northbridge -- and modified the PSU fan to spin at 12V/100% the whole time, the CPU sits at a cool 40C, 48C peak (haven't seen it go to 50C yet), drives usually hover a bit closer to 45C regardless of what I'm doing.

Today, I have tried Asus EAX 1300 Pro Silent.
Because of using a short kind of the NEC 7173 DVD writer, this vga card is ok. However if you choose the SATA version of the NEC DVD writer, it is perfect, because you can open the wing of the silent heating.
Probably I have to buy extra fans to the empty card slots in order to transfer out the warm air.

What about dual-slot cards that have the extra slot on the other side - such as the 8800 GTS - looking at the pictures, it seems that it will not fit?

I found and installed the beta driver and can report that Shogun Total War works absolutely perfectly with the integrated graphics.
Poor test as I didn't try to install before driver update!
I might try Medieval Total War version 1 next, as I cannot believe how poor STW is to play compared to MTWII - and I used to love playing it!

Impressive setup you got there krhainos, what size fans are those at the front of the case?

Also this is an mATX mobo right? How easy would it be to move all the components to a new case? I need space for more hard drives! my HD's run at 50-54c

the T3 uses a mini-BTX board, so your options are a bit limited -- the fans I used at the top are stripped out of cheapy rinky-dink hard drove cooler -- so I believe they're 50mm's -- and wired right into the 12V line.

The other issue with the T3-series is that it uses that custom breakout board for the cardreader/USB ports/headphone -- but most importantly, the pin block for power button/power LED. should'nt be too big of a problem if you're comfortable with modding boards .. and some light solder work

However, I've found more success opening the power supply, bypassing the temperature sensor-controlled voltage regulator and having the fan spin at 12V. I use a Thermal take fan noise absorber so it's not that loud. I've found it to be a bit quiter than having those two little fans spinning. Also, the oem asus BTX cooler was swapped out in favor of a Thermaltake one -- which uses a larger heatsink and a larger and deeper fan - the fan seems to spin up less.

Here's my current rough "bill of materials"
    $512.00 1x Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 2.66Ghz
    $455.99 4x mushkin 1GB DDR2-800 5-5-5-12, 1.8V
    $219.99 1x Asus T3 G965-based SFF Barebones
    $044.99 1x Antec TruePower 2.0 430W PSU
    $069.99 1x Seagate Barracuda 320GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb*
    $209.99 1x Western Digital Raptor 150GB 10kRPM SATA
    $110.00 1x Plextor PX-755SA SATA DVD+/-RW
    $245.99 1x nVidia GeForce 7950GT KO 512MB GDDR3
    $005.99 1x Thermaltake HDD fan
    $039.99 1x Thermaltake BTX Type 1 heatsink/fan

OK so I've decided not to get another case just for more HD space, got an antec MX-1 on the way to connect via eSATA.

I'm thinking of a new CPU heatsink too, is yours the Thermaltake Silent or Safari krhainos? (CL-P0191 or CL-P0030-03) and how much of a difference has it made?

Anyone got suggestions as to how I can lower the HD temperatures? I've got a 74gb raptor and a Maxtor 300gb in there.

That Antec looks like a pretty slick enclosure. I have the Thermaltake one, but it appears that they've taken the same product and renamed it. I didn't have a choice at the time since it was the only non-OEM BTX Type I cooler available. I'll get you an exact model number when I get home, but I'm pretty sure it's the CL-P0191 -- which appears to be Silent. I didn't have the option of the Safari available at the time of purchase. Looking into both products, it looks like the Silent has a heatpipe, and "low noise" as designated by the napping kitty -- which the Safari lacks. If anything; I didn't see that much of a difference in cooling, but a definate decrease in noise -- especially the "mooing" phenomenon that happens when the fan spins up for about 15 seconds an back down, as the temperature hovers right at the mid-high threshold for the Q-Fan. Also worth mentioning that with the fan at full blast, the CPU went all the way down into mid-30C's -- I might try that again tonight to get a more accurate number, since that still doesn't sound right.

The hard drives I have in my machine have peaked at 51C last night -- granted, the ambient temperature in my room was 83F, so that didn't surprise me too much. You got some pretty hot running drives though -- the Raptor's a 10,000RPM beast, and the Maxtors are known for getting pretty hot. :-/

While Q-Fan is on my mind -- anyone know if SpeedFan or comporable product works with the P5B-BN boards yet?

edit: it is indeed the "Silent" model

Excellent news, thanks for that. I've ordered the Thermaltake Silent cooler and hope it makes some kind of change.

The Antec Enclosure is better than expected, performs better and looks better, HD is kept at 37-39c never seen 40c; that's a drop of 10-15c! I'm ordering another!

Speedfan loads up an finds some sensors but only shows temperatures and the fan adjustments remain useless. The only was to adjust the heat sink fan is through the Asus Probe 2 utility; am I right? I might just try having some small fan near the HDD's to get some air moving in there (they're still always above 50c after 30 mins or so after booting.

As for BIOS well still waiting for the proper version of that dodgy beta to come out, hope its soon.
