correct me if i am wrong but the pre order for win 7 is direct through microsoft.

The said list of retailers are ones that are doing the free upgrade to windows 7 if you buy a vista desktop or laptop from a date last week when it started.

I guess the query of the "you get 2 discs in the same box" is confusing as when you look at the new packaging, there seems to be only room for 1 disc inside.
I'm fairly sure with Vista that both versions came on the same disc, and you got which ever version your key was for, no?

No, the retail boxed versions came with only 32 bit (except for Ultimate which had both) media. You might be thinking of the 64 bit version which contained most things (libraries etc) in both 32 and 64 bit for compatibility - which is part of the reason the install is much bigger than the 32 bit one.

Anyone know if the FULL version that us UK buyers are getting is an OEM, or actual full?

I own an OEM and afaik it will only work with this mobo....correct me if I am wrong!

However a non OEM copy of Win 7 appeals to me as I will probably change my mobo in next 1-2 years..

For the current US offer MS state both discs are included. We need to see if that's the same for the UK offer, but I don't see any reason it wouldn't be.

That doesn't appear to be what MS are saying - the said list of retailers are doing the upgrade pre-order offer regardless of buying a vista computer. (for example: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Wind...d_i=1286119011)

In the US if you buy a vista computer then you don't just get the upgrade for half price, you get it free (plus cost of media/postage).

They're the same thing and we know we're getting that version of the software. We don't know what license we will get though - could be either Full, Upgrade or OEM (unlikely).

I read on trusted reviews that the version you will get when you pre-order this will be a full retail version. I hope this is true as i am thinking of changing components sometime next year.

Since when has this ever been a problem with an OEM version? If it asks you to reactivate due to changed hardware all you need to do is phone up and say you've changed a few components but it's the same PC. Done it countless times and they've been fine with it every time.

It was clamped down a fair bit with Vista - although still perfectly doable.

You just need to stay within your EULA and it's fine. As long as you're replacing the parts as direct replacements for faulty ones then you're okay. Reusing an OEM licence when building a new machine breaks the EULA.

Ah ok, good to know thanks. Last upgrade I changed quite a bit including motherboard, hard drives and memory but they were fine when I mentioned it wasn't installed on any other pc and that I had reformatted.

Getting a full retail version of 7 for £50 would be fantastic though. Am I right in thinking the retail version is allowed to be on a desktop as well as a laptop?

    Re: windows 7 pre order

Does anyone have an Microsoft source for the July 15th - August 14th pre-order dates? Forgive me for doubting the Hexus reports, but the US pre-order is already underway and I'm keen not to miss this! I've had a good hunt on the MS UK website though, and there's no details.

Anyone else considering the Professional edition for the XP support? I use a utility called Vuescan which is XP based and powers a film scanner worth a couple of hundred quid - not to mention a handful of old games it would be fun to be able to break out from time to time.

There won't be any 3d acceleration under the virtual XP, but it should be okay for your scanner - though if it's worth that much I'd just keep your old computer for using the scanner with.

What about using Virtualbox to run XP? At least it's free...

    Re: windows 7 pre order

I think XP mode is more a taste of what's to come in future Windows releases. In 7 its half implemented and requires you to install it and set up etc. With Windows 8 I can see it being purely 64bit and then having 32bit and 16bit emulation (aka XP Mode) which would cut the kernal size drastically.

The information page has been updated to detail the participating retailers in the UK now, although it is of course possible that more may be added.

Just checked ebuyer and they are also offering OEM copies of Windows Vista with a free upgrade to Windows 7, for those of you thinking about building now...
