    Re: windows 7 pre order

Well, I'll give you a simple digest: The one you are pre-ordering is the full version, not OEM, not upgrade etc. There is one version so I strongly doubt it would be either of the above.

    Re: windows 7 pre order

the whole legitimate copy of windows to get the pre order does that mean i have to reinstall xp or vista on my pc to pre order then go back to windows 7

As currently i am only using win 7 however i do have legit versions of xp and vista but dont really wanna have to go back to them

    Re: windows 7 pre order

AFAIK no you don't - you just treat it like any other full copy. I think people are getting confused because MS said something like 'Since there will be NO upgrade version, we are offering the FULL version at the upgrade price' - I think this has led people to all sorts of assumptions.

    Re: windows 7 pre order

So i pretty much get it all, so which version is everyone going for then? pro or home premium, the idea of XP mode takes my fancy but from my understanding it has no D3D support so is basically just virtual box?

    Re: windows 7 pre order

I'm going for premium myself. To use Virtualbox remember you still need an XP license - at least with 7 pro it's included. But like you say I don't believe it has D3D support so would be no good for games etc.

To clarify - you don't get a "free" XP license with 7 Pro - you get a license for XP to use in Virtual PC for the prebuilt image. That doesn't mean that you have a free XP license to use in Virtualbox etc.

EDIT - which reading your post again is pretty much what you said. I'll get my coat

Has there been any more news on the family edition being available here or is the pre-order discount as good as it gets?

Well I'm hoping Littlewoods do indeed participate and at the currently advertised price of £99.99 (Professional). My plan: create an account ready for 15th July. Then hopefully be able to benefit from Quidco and any 'first order' offers Littlewoods are running, e.g. £30 of your first order over £60. That could make Windows 7 Professional around £65.

IIRC, Microsoft Store gets 15% cashback from Quidco. Might want to use that instead.

Meanwhile, I'll be trying to get a non-E version.

    Re: windows 7 pre order

Why bother? You might be breaking the EULA if you use a US version and it's only IE missing isn't it? It's easy enough to download on another computer.

    thats not the point!

the point is you have to download it everytime you install windows etc...with me thats quite often.

as i possibly said before, thats my virus plan, keep all work on external media (usb sticks etc) then when ever i get a virus just re install windows

    Re: windows 7 pre order

I agree you should install whenever you get a virus but why do you get them so often anyway? You should use AV as a preventative if you don't already. I don't know about you but I don't use IE anyway (except for anything that needs ActiveX) so I have Firefox and other apps on a flash drive.
