    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

www.HEXUS.net just dropped to 119 in the team rankings. We're due to drop another place, and then climb 2 places in 3.4 days....

    http://folding.extremeoverclocking.c...php?s=&t=69776

2 steps forward.... 2 steps back.

In an update on my rig, I've left the media-server ticking over until I can swap out the mobo, CPU and ram. That's also switched back to folding BIGADV and is now putting out 30k ppd. The GPU folding is disabled at the moment as the GTX 295 doesn't like working as the primary card in the secondary PCI-E slot. Nothing but slowdowns and driver crashes.

I had run out of hoses to test the replacement RIIE mobo with. Managed to cobble together enough to get a quick loop running, and finally got Windows 7 to install from a single speed DVD ROM drive on the ATA 133 port. Took FOREVER. Seriously, it took like 3 hours to install.... I thought it had crashed at one point so I restarted the process.

It wasn't 'till I went down to watch a bit of telly, then checked on it before bed that I realised it was still doing something - must be a driver issue or something because once it had finished (I left it running overnight) it booted up lovely from the hd install.

Tonight I'll open up my network settings at home and assign it an IP address, then I'll stick the folding software on it and see if I can't get another few 50k ppd for the team. I'm away in Italy with work Thursday and Friday, so I'll have to get it up and running, then leave it running while I'm over there to test the stability, so not going to push it too hard. 4-4.2 Ghz should be more than enough for simple testing, plus the GTX 285.

What's everyone else been doing? Seems like this bitcoin thing has snaffled all the attention, and rightly so as it's about money. I'd gladly fold on a radeon for money if I had one.

Shame the cause isn't quite so noble....

I'm still here, folding away nicely, though your right the lure of money has gotten people quite interested in bitcoin, not interested myself, but I may just be odd.

Not interested in bitcoin either - perhaps I just don't understand it, but it seems like the CPU clocks are just a means to limit the money supply, they don't do anything useful - truly odd.

I'm happy doing plain old folding!

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

As I've said before I would, I've stopped folding, since I will be handing over my PC to my brother soon (he won't leave it on much), so the SMP folding is out of the picture (won't make the deadlines) and classic client folding just isn't worth the electricity. So until autumn - no folding from this lowly Phenom II.

But maybe in the autumn I'll be back with a vengeance of some giant heatsink and some overclock

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

Well, we'll look forward to seeing you back in "the fall" as you will no doubt be referring to it it after your summer trip.

The 3rd machine is now up and folding BIGADV. I can't believe that my Sandybridge @ 4.7 Gz on 8 cores is 5k faster than my i7 970 @ 4Ghz on 12 threads!

Lets see what kind of points I can pull in over the next 3 days....

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

I'm still ticking along at a lower speed from previous. The bitcoin stuff is done on my home machine since folding on 6870's is either quite pointless or just crashes. Seems to be quite a nice line as to which oe you do depending on the available hardware.

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

I'm a bit suspicious of the bitcoin, both about the need to use all the computing power and about the real prospect of any gains. Also, my computer would not exactly churn out the bitcoins...
I'm still folding away on the SMP client - this month looks like it will be my best ever even though I lost a couple of days tinkering with more overclocking (my computer flat out refuses to be IBT stable with more voltage or less voltage or a higher clock). Must be the new work units from the last update bringing me more points

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

I have been quite on the forums but the system has been pushing out the results on a regular basis. My wife and kids are now back in the country so that leaves less time for gaming and more time for folding

The sandybridge CPUs are well worth the money as the horsepower they have under the bonnet is very impressive.

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

They certainly are. I think I can get a little bit more out of my X58 setup but it's at the cost of much more heat. My rooms like a bloody oven, so hence I'm running it while I'm working away.

Got 3 BIGADV units running simultaneously:

    45k PPD from 2600K @ 4.7 Ghz underwater at 51C
    40K PPD from 970 @ 4.0 Ghz at 75C (**** water loop)
25k PPD from 980X @ 3.2 GHZ @60C (again, an inadequate water loop)

I'm in the process of consolidating my rigs and cooling equipment, so I can get some faster clocks out of the 970 and flog the 980X (I'm broke!). The 970 can get up to 4.3Ghz that I know of and knocks out 50k ppd while my GTX 295 is also running. I tried this on my Sandy bridge rig, and the CPU slows down significantly more when running Nvidia's folding client - (drops from 45k to 30k or there abouts)

Cheers. I'm just relieved that my rigs have not cooked yet. It's a bit nervy checking the scores and seeing nothing for 2 days, then finally, the points started to roll in..

Wonder if my "toy room" is a s warm as it is here in Milan...?

How do i go about setting -bigadv in the new 'all-in-one' client?

Edit: Any news on getting our names coloured at 1 million points as well?
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Feck. Power went off - Tumble dryer has gone pop, and my machines have all been off for 12 hours. Lost folding from 9:18 last night through to 10am today...... That's the BIGADV points reduced for the next submission by several thousand....
