    Re: AMD - Piledriver chitchat

I know, I'm just curious - particularly since it doesn't seem to be excessively loading either side of the equation. You look at something like 1680x1050 results, where a GTX480, GTX580, GTX670, and GTX680 are all within 1fps, and you'd swear there's a CPU bottleneck - then you look at the 7950, 7950 boost, 7970 and 7970 GHz and you'd swear that it's still GPU limited*. Likewise the CPU tests - it's hard to tell if it's heavily threaded or not. It appears to be moderately threaded and dependent on int throughput, which leaves me suprised the Phenom IIs don't do a little better, particularly the X4 980...

*It does seem particularly partial to GCN graphics: wonder if there's some OpenCL offloading going on or something...?

The low frame-rates with bugger all utilisation is what struck me too.

As for OpenCL, is that possible with a DX9 title?
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

    Re: AMD - Piledriver chitchat

Don't see why not. You couldn't use DX11 ComputeShaders, obviously, but there's no reason* you couldn't code physics or other float-heavy in OpenCL and simultaneously offload some calculations to the GPU - it'd explain why AMD have an advantage over NVidia at CPU-limited resolutions (i.e. the GPU has idle time to spare and will process the float ops faster).

*at least, AFAIK. I am not an expert, and could be wrong.

Another game I suspect where the FX6300 will be much quicker than a Core i3 3220.
Why do you only suspect? The FX4100 performs better than the i3 3220 and the difference between the FX8150 and FX8350 is large so I would be happy to claim that the FX6300 is quicker than the i3 3220 in SimCity.

Wow, so 8350 gives 3x the frame rate than Athlon II 265 in Sim City when paired with Titan.

It seems so! The Atom SOCs don't support DX11,and it will be interesting to see how the next generation Atom SOCs will do with regards the graphics,as Temash has 128 GCN cores AFAIK.

    Hi,

A friend of my is going to be building a PC soon. This will be his first build and proper PC. Now I have been trying to help him with parts but where both stuck on what CPU he should go for. At first he was set on getting a i5 3570k. But after watching the tek syndicate benchmarks he then started looking at the 8350. I noticed there is also a 8320 which from what I can see there is no real difference. The 8320 is about £15 cheaper as well. If he is to go AMD which one would benefit him the most?

He is just going to be gaming on the system. For the graphics card he is going for a 7870 or a 7950.

That recent article claims the next Xbox will be using an x86-64 CPU, wonder if it's also Jaguar? Things could end up pretty boring in hardware terms if so - i.e. both using very similar platforms.

Yes I thought it had already been fairly well leaked that it's another AMD APU with similar specs to the PS4 (possibly slightly slower).

I thought the XBox was using an APU with IBM POWER cores, and multiple SOCs?? If it is another system with an AMD CPU and GPU,expect more derping over the internet by outraged PC hardware enthusiasts.

I'm pretty sure it was the xbox dev kits that were basically an A10-5800k. I wouldn't be surprised to see MS go with something nearer trinity but with more graphics - that'd give it less cores the the PS4, but faster ones. Not sure how I feel about that....

yeah i thought the same - and not quite as fast as PS4 but more ` entertainment centric`
