Not A Bad Game But Nothing New

I not quite sure how some of you are getting at this vista problem?
Running vista 64bit and it runs very smoothly at mid to high graghics, it may loose a few fps over xp but it's really not that big a deal.
It works and looks good (although beta drivers are a must), a little buggy but this is only a demo.
Interesting thread. Im not going to be able to try it properly for a week or so.
Same here. 64 bit aswell and all ran fine mid/high.
Didnt disuade from the fact that it got bery boring very quickly.
This game has been eagerly awaited for so long, and although OK, is nothing new.
Nothing new = waste of cash.
At least BF2 took games to the next level. This one, from the 10 minutes i could be bothered with it for, stepped back 18 months when it shouldve been a huge leap forward.
i think i have played this demo about 20 times now, each time i have gone about it a different way - this game is just like farcry, on crack! i have even gone as far as going into the level editor, adding more enemies and leaving myself a rocket launcher and nuke launcher
it really is fun to play on hard, i may try it on delta later on. such a great looking game too, running everything on high and a couple of settings on very high - no frame drops at all, no complaints from me!
its everything i was expecting and more! i just hope this demo can last me until the full game is released !
abysmal framerates during rendered cut-scenes..
played ok-ish during gameplay.. on all high with 1440x900.. any attempts to go 1680x1050 becomes completely unplayable..
Any attempts to do AA as well results in terrible framerates
My setup as it is.. <-----------
On those beta 169 drivers..
Me want Ultrabook
Woeful fps for me. Running the system listed <--
I played at medium settings and tried 1280*1024, right down to 1024*768. Changing the resolution had practically no effect on fps, and changing from medium to low settings did nothing.
It seems this runs slow no matter what setting I use.
The game plays so badly that I didnt even bother finishing the demo. I just went back to HL:Episode 2.
I can see how people are annoyed at the bad frame rate (which may or may not get better when its released). But whats wrong with the gameplay? Why are people saying "just like far cry" like its a bad thing? Far Cry was a brilliant game that is still considered a classic today. Crysis was meant to improve on the same basis. Multiple paths, clever enemies, lots of vehicles, huge scenery, solid gameplay.
Think of this game as Far Cry 2, set in the future, with different characters, and a different story.
I dont think the gameplay or even storyline is of any importance. What i do think is of great importance is how the Crytek team have learned about their mistake on releasing the SDK so late after release of Farcry which in result caused alot of the heavy mods for that game to either cease production and die or move onto other engines like source & bf engines. Any game that wants to last the test of time needs to have a solid multiplayer and good mod support, Farcry lacked this big time on both accounts and died a very quick death for modding support and multiplayer numbers..
I was on a Farcry mod for about 6mths waiting for the SDK we had everything from about 5000 fans, all the content ready to go models, sounds, animations etc etc yet we watched as our fanbase died, our team members dropped off and joined other mods on differnt games, all because we were waiting for the SDK to be released. When it was released it was serously too late to be put at any good use and hence no major mods were released for Farcry....

Hell and Fire was spawned to be released.
Personally, and I'm not denying you your right to opinion, i think that statement isnt entirely correct. A game doesnt necessarily have to be totally new and innovative to be considered good. A game can just implement things that have been done before in a better way, or in an overall package that ehnaces the games' experience.
And come on - a half an hour demo. Think of it in terms of film trailers. This demo is like a teaser trailer, which is meant to draw you in to want to see more. There are going to be different climates, and enemies, and more chances to utilise the nanosuit. Just give it a chance.
I dont really think that it set out to be the all conquering innovation that some of you think it should be. The demo videos I saw were about using the terrain and the suit to achieve the same objective differently - which it does. Sneaking, shooting, cloaking, swimming, using a jeep as a a rolling bomb. yes its like Far Cry, but its going to be wrapped out in a high production value, cinematic package that will be a good experience.
Dont mean to tread on peoples toes, but why are some of you so disappointed. What did you expect. And disclaimer - it IS still a pre-release demo.

I suppose CRYSIS has drawn so much media and hype that it has also caught the attention of full-time hypocrits around.. not that Im suggesting anyone here is one..
Most notion has been out just based on the fact that is SHOULD be mind blowing from all the attention that it has mustered to itself. So anything that differs from that datum will get smacked on the bollocks hard by these individuals..
Me want Ultrabook
Riiight, time to add in some more here.
First off, as regards 'buginess' etc, it is a pre-release demo... so getting it to work and get decent performance is going to very much be hit and miss. this is one fo the things the Crytek chaps are going all out to get sorted.
Don't forget that producing a demo whilst developing a game IS NOT just a case of chopping out a section and lobbing it up for download, it's a massive task in itself, right when you're busiest.
My issue wasn't at all with Crysis or the demo, it was with Vista itself, which my blog post goes into in more detail.
As to the game not being a great leap forward and basically an updated Far Cry, well yeah, I can see that on the surface but in other areas this is quite a jump ahead.
Look at the interaction with the environment for start. Forget chopping down trees with weapons, just look at how the environment reacts to what you do. Fire your weapon through bushes and the leaves ripple... you can be tracked, even when clocked, by the swaying leaves as you pass by. The AI has had a major tweaking and, other than some areas where it's obviously not finished, it's pretty impressive.
There's a LOT more to Crysis than what you can see in the demo, but sadly I can't discuss any of it or I'll breach the NDA we're under.
Comparing DX9 under XP to DX10 under Vista (when it was working) there is a considerable improvement which adds hugely to the realism and the feeling of 'being there'. That said, the gameplay between versions is totally unaffected and it makes no difference which you run in that respect.
I'm starting to think that demos like this, just as with Timeshift, actually do more harm than good. Sure, we've all been clamouring for one and they delivered, but I personally feel that the problems people are encountering and the issues they're having will turn a lot of people off.
This is a shame because the gameplay develops a lot further than what you see in the demo with the suit powers almost becoming essential to progression.
If I weren't a reviewer for a living, I would still keep a close eye on the reviews once the game is out and make my decision then... I certainly wouldn't dismiss it on the basis of this demo.
you know what would be awesome. if they made thief 4 with this engine
Nick - nice post, read your blog too though I don't think we're at the stage of no more games being released for the PC - not yet anyway. I agree in a sense that demos like this, are starting to put people off. But it's not the demo that's the issue, it's the 'pre-release' tag. Even games are released before they're fully working these days, and the bugs really do put people off. I think nVidia are too busy counting the money they're making off the 8 series to bother with the driver issues, and the games devs are trying to work to a schedule.
Obviously it might be worth a second look in a few months whenever it's released, and when it's more polished, and when it's got all the features in there - but at the moment games that come out (whether as a demo or actual release) when they're not 'finished' and bugged do put people off and the publisher can't blame anyone but themselves.
Having said that, I can understand there is a pressure for them to deliver to fans, but seeing as the games industry (IIRC) overtakes Hollywood by some margin now for revenue, surely hiring more skilled people to help put these games together isn't that hard. A lot of games seem to be made with still fairly small core dev teams - at least from the credits - yet when you start to get on scales such as this where it's millions of pounds, thousands of customers, sales across the globe maybe it's time to scale up.
Or perhaps worse, ship off some of the 'core' work to India where there's more IT grads than anywhere...
plays great, looks great, the game that will sell ten thousand graphics cards
