Let's not forget that the demo will be based on an OLD build... it'll not be representative of the build that's gone gold.

It might even be several months older than the gold version, as is the way of creating a demo.

So I think it's more of a case of hoping that NVIDIA and MS sort out THEIR issues, rather than Crytek...

They're not really DX10 though right? They're DX9 implementation at best I guess. Either way, I'm gonna take look at this tonight - I get terrible performance using DX10 code path cf. DX9!

    Here here!

I'm reading so many people all over the interweb slating Crysis for running so slowly when they're playing an old build on beta drivers! I mean, if nVidia are chucking out beta's just for the demo, it gives me the impression that the issue isn't so much with Crysis...

Cool - will have to give it a try tonight and see how it goes. Still waiting for a proper tweakguide to let me totally customise the cfg files. There are bound to be some effects that can be toned down that go mostly unnoticed.

Re: Crysis Demo fps + your thoughts

Used Xpertool from Gainward (works for my XFX 8800GTS) to overclock in beta 169.01, seems rather OC friendly than previous WHQL versions.. or perhaps Xpertools is just better, not sure..

    Got myself a healthy 625MHz/1900MHz-Mem/1480MHz-Shader..

I'm usually stuck with 570/1900 with no control over shaders in 159 drivers..

The game now is far more playable at 1440x900 with Very High settings..
    Me want Ultrabook

Re: Crysis Demo fps + your thoughts

Well, I played it for about 40 minutes. I think its amazing. I love it. I like shooters that require me to sneak around and think and stuff.... rather than just streaming rockets at endless hoardes of enemies jumping at my face. I loved Far Cry, and this is like an improved version of that, so its great for me.

As for performance, I sent my monitor back, so I'm playing it in 1024x768 at the moment. I was annoyed it didn't allow me to enable Vsync, so that was turned off. Next time I play it, I'll force that on using my video card.

Anyway, I had everything on maximum (DX9), and it never dropped below 45fps. It was awesome. I am keen to try it with the DX10 tweak, and hopefully that won't make much difference to my speed. I now am just left wondering how much of a performance loss I'm going to get, when going up to my usual 1680x1050. But really, even if it became bad at that resolution, I'd be happy to just lower the res and play it in all its glory. It looked amazing. The graphics are just a league above anything else I've seen. I couldn't believe it.

Re: Crysis Demo fps + your thoughts

What i'm wondering is how long it'll be till you're all on your own... I mean of the 5 Delta operatives that went to the island, two have died already in the first level . I hope the others survive for a good while as it'll be fun to watch them using their suit abilities in battle (if we get to see that ).

Re: Crysis Demo fps + your thoughts

Yeah I liked looking at their suits too. I wouldn't be surprised if they all die eventually though, and then you are left on your own.

The whole thing reminded me so much of the film "Predator", that I think they must have been really inspired by that, so I bet you end up on your own eventually, like Arnie did

Re: Crysis Demo fps + your thoughts

OK just tried it again with new drivers, i got minimal difference, average up by about 0.3FPS So nothing exciting running these settings:

    1680x1050
    AA: 2x

    Texture:Very High
    Objects: High
    Shadows:Medium
    Physics:Very High
    Shaders:High
    Volumetric;High
    Game:High
    PP:Very High
    Particles:High
    Water:Very High

I ran fraps for roughly the same amount of time over the same section of the game.

    Definately I blame nVidia.

Why is their support for directx 10 so poor? (Actually I know the answer to this, as I read an article. They're 'half' commiting to dx10 but don't want to alienate dx9 users who are still the main market, as they might go to ATI, and ATI doesn't have the same kind of dx10 price / performance as nvidia yet, so they don't need to panic too much on that end)

dx 6/7/8/9 were all backwards compatible, but because dx10 isn't it's one or the other and at the minute games are still being written with the dx9 API so people are sticking with XP (mistrust of Vista? Luddite principle? Kidding! ), so card manufacturers are not seeing the massive markets for developing directx10 fully yet, so instead are putting more resources into their dx9 firmware / drivers.

It's a market reality, unfortunately, and change can be hard

Why buy a dx10 card when there are no dx10 games, no dx10 drivers and the operating system that supports it isn't popular so you probably don't have it anyway. So then, why should card developers provide lots of support for dx10 when (guessing) 80% of the market is still playing and using dx9 (even on the 8800gts - where it performs amazingly well on dx9).

It's all a bit chicken and egg. Game devs don't want to push DX10 too hard because there's not much GPU support from Green and Red, and the graphics manufacturers don't want to push because there's no games out.
Crysis is the only thing that is coming out without "bolt-on" DX10 effects. Hopefully this is the step forward that will tug everyone else in the right direction.

Crysis is the only thing that is coming out without "bolt-on" DX10 effects. Hopefully this is the step forward that will tug everyone else in the right direction.
Well there's been one or two others that were lower profile that were mainly dx9 but featured as you say, dx10 'effects'.

    Company of Heroes
    Bioshock
Unreal Tournament 3 is said to have it as well (maybe thats why the demo kept stuttering for me )

But I agree, it's a big leap for anyone to make the initial investment when it may not pay off and at the moment the market has been thriving on it's own. If it ain't broke, why fix it? Just going to be a massive risk in terms of money and the infrastructure / research that goes into changing platforms for a manager / company to jump in, so I think at the moment a few of the bigger names are releasing games with support for both, and maybe when they've tested the water we may see more and more games being released for dx10.

We've hit a bump in the economy too with signs of inflation / slowing growth which is going to make shareholders less likely to like companys / publishers playing about with their money in ventures that *might* pay off. Run for the hills, etc. etc.

This is what i mean, Too many "bolt-on" effects. "oh, you've got a DX10 card, heres a cookie." "look what we can do with volumetric smoke! Wehee!". Crysis, being such a high profile game that will succeed and then succeed some more, is in the perfect position to show people how it's done. They have the backing of EA (the company eater) so they won't be losing any money.

As for it not being broke- Alright, so DX9 works nicely, but 5 years down the road and MS thought "hey, we can do this better". I know it's a big leap to take, but the new API is a good improvement. It's a big leap, buying Vista AND new hardware, and i don't blame people for being apprehensive, but i think it's the only way forward. Changes need to be made the the HAL to dedicate more to the GPU-->3DApplication link. DX9 just isn't efficient enough to realistically be worth using. You'll just end up with Graphics cards with 2GB GDDR5 and 4GHZ GPU, when it's not necessary.
