Dune. By far. One of the best balanced RTS games made, and the legend which started it all.
Made me fall in love with the Dune universe. You'll usually find me with my head buried in a Dune book when I have nothing else to do

I personally like rise of nations and the codename panzer series. Excellent games.

He seems to want to know about a current one. I played Dune 2 (and 1 for that matter) and they were great at the time and nostalgia would mean those who played them before would enjoy them, but I wouldn't really recommend someone looking for a good game now to play command and conquer.

I'd say that Company of Heroes looks like it will be excellent - got many rave reviews, demo seems great, dawn of war on which it's based was excellent. Looks good too.

Maybe Dawn of War if a budget or sci fi option is required.

Also Civilization IV and Rome Total War.
Tough on mirrors, tough on the causes of mirrors.

    Wow

You people have put up quite a list. I don't know which one to choose.
I posted this message to try and solve a problem. Not to create another one. decisions; decisions.

    Thanks alot

you can get a quad pack compilation "Atari RTS War Deluxe" comprising: Act of War; Axis and Allies Total Annihilation and TA: Kingdoms.
froogle shows that the pack is available for £11.69, which is an amazing bargain.
I played occasional skirmish TA:Kingdoms for over 5 years and loved it (get "the Iron Plague" expansion if you can find it - had to get mine from the US).
I got Act of War last week - very good and worth it at discount prices.

Total Annihilation by a mile, I wasted much of my youth on that game.

    no question about it.

I have put thousands of hours into Medieval: Total War/Viking Invasion over the last four years.

    I still play it now.

I don't know what to do about that game.
Medieval Total War 2 is going to be a release date must buy and probably so is Supreme Commander.
I tend to play games for a very long time. e.g. Rome Total War since it came out until last week, when I got Act of War.
Not enough time. Just gonna have to clone myself.

Settlers 2 was the best of the series. Is the anniversary version that much different. Is it worth getting?
