RTS: Dawn of War, Company of Heroes, entire C&C series (not for it's strategy but just cos it's fun). I'm also a big fan of the settlers series (apart from the newest one, that was awful).
TBS: Galactic Civilisations is very good, Master of Orion, Civ 4 and the total war series (I enjoy the TBS part of it more than the RTS part but still love the RTS bit of it).
The game that converted me to PC gaming was Setters II, awesome game, lost many hours playing that game, I still prefer it over III and IV.
AOE series are my favorite.
Dune 1 was kind of strategic as well, getting spice, building armies, spying etc
Really liked Total Annihilation and can't wait for the next
Advance Wars on GBA and Settlers on Amiga had me hooked for ages too
Populous & Powermonger (Amiga! - more of a god game but with strategic elements)
Dune 2 (Amiga! - my all-time favourite)
Homeworld 1, 1.5 & 2 (I so wish Relic would make another - my other all-time favourite)
Age Of Empires 3 (Looking forwards to the expansion pack)
Civilization IV (and expansion - especially if you don't mind losing a few days every now and then)
Battle for Middle-Earth II (escapism and some of the characters are quite funny)
Warcraft 3 (it's alright on skirmish mode)
Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War (with expansions - only recently got into this and loving it. It's also the only RTS that my friend can play!)
Galactic Civilization 2 (great!)
Company of Heroes (another Relic masterpiece!)
Backgammon (cheap and doesn't need a high-end rig!)
I'll have to agree with MuTTy_Hc, Starcraft's the best 1on1 stragegy game out there, even to this date.. But Total Annihilation gets my vote! If you interested, look into the "TA Spring" project, a faithfull redoing of the original in upgraded 3D engine.. Haven't played the newest version out there, I hope they've improved the multiplayer..
Civilization: Call to Power and Galactic Civilization if you looking into turn based stragegy
Ahh.. blessed Galactic Civilization, how many nights thy hast robbed from me
I have a real soft spot for Advance Wars on the GBA. great turn based multiplayer action
Total Annihilation gets my vote.
I still fire it up now and then for skirmish too.
but..
COH is pulling me into the game pretty much like TA did.
I have enjoyed all the C&C games massively, although i have to say the best has to be Company Of Heros. The graphics, physics and attention to detail are just outstanding - better than any FPS i have played. It's amazing, but i wish it had a waypoint system so those tanks dont crush your carefully layed base defences
I think starcraft was the only RTS that I stuck it out with - I have a p1ss poor attention span and cant be arsed to learn all the commands etc! I also bought Act of War but it was so buggy that it put me off RTSs for good. Even company of heroes annoyed me after an hour or so - though this is definately my shortcoming and not the games.
What we share with everyone is glum, and dark...
One springs to mind.
Company of Heroes
its all good
Lol, think i'm the only one to mention it but...
Dark Reign
has to be AOE 2.
ROBBO
StarCraft by far if you ever play against humans. If not why are you playing single player "strategy games.
