Wow, Supreme Commander is looking nice.

Although if it's anything like TA it'll be a little bit hectic for my tastes. Can only multitask so many units before my head explodes.

Medieval 2 has just eaten a whole day of my life. Lucky I'm on holiday atm. Gotta find a way of stopping the damn inquisition though. My assassins just aren't cutting it..

    hehe!

I get a bit stressed out by some of these games too, if they are too fast. But generally they just suck me in and I don't blink for the next few hours I really like them.

Personally, my favourite strategy games so far, in no particular order, are these:

    1) Dune.
Dune was the game that started the whole thing really. It was Dune that evolved into Dune 2. And it was Dune 2 that created the first C&C game. The original Dune was quite different though. It was half a strategy game, moving units on a map etc. But it was also half an adventure game where you travel a beautiful world talking to people and following the story which was just great. At the time, it was by far the best game I had ever played.

    2) Total Annihilation.
I just preferred it to C&C in a lot of ways. C&C maybe had it beat in a few other ways. But overall, I loved it the most. The only thing that let me down was a few balance issues.

    3) Supreme Commander.
I'm not in beta, but I have read and heard a lot about it, and I've been following it for a long time. Its the number 1 game on my "Can't wait to buy" list.

    4) C&C: Tiberium Sun.
I really liked the early C&C games. The later games I am REALLY dissapointed in though. Red alert was ok I think. (Cant really remember... im losing track of them all). Red alert 2 was just a waste of time for me though. And then Generals was a real let down for me. They just started feeling like mass produced minimum effort games. Anyway, Tiberium Sun, is probably the peak of the C&C games for me personally. I loved stealth bases, and I loved the GDI. I also loved how there where some HUGE maps. One I remember the most I think was called, "Night of the Mutants" and it was massive, and had plenty of Tiberium, but lots of mutants which could destroy certain units easily. I loved it anyway, and I think that is maybe the best RTS I've played. There is a sequal due soon, in 2007, but again, I've lost faith in EA since their recent attempts.

    5) Jagged Alliance 2
Its not very well known. And its a good few years old now, or more. Its also only half RTS and half turn based. It doesn't have the hugest amount of depth, and its not to be compared with something like C&C. But there was something about it that had me hooked... You control a team of up to 6 mercenaries/soldiers, and you have to liberate and entire country, sector by sector. It was just a really great game, and pretty original. Worth looking into anyway.

    6) Hidden & Dangerous
Well its technically a strategy game isn't it? Again, its not like C&C, but its a brilliant squad based shooter with a strong strategic element. You can download it for free now! If you havn't tried it, you should definitely try it! There is a sequal which was ok.... but buggy when I played it. And it didn't really live up to my expectations after the first game.

    7) Age of Wonders 2 (Plus the expansion called: Shadow Magic)
Its not real time strategy, its turn based. But I really liked it. Thanks to it being based on magic rather than weapons, there is just so much depth there. There are dozens of spells to cast, and units have their own abilities too. So it just gives a bit more depth than just having a unit fire a sniper rifle etc. Some people prefer the Heroes of Might and Magic series, but they are both pretty similar. I just got into Age of Wonders first.

    8) Syndicate
For old times sake I loved that game..

    9) Countless others that I wont bore people with

If I had to vote for a best, it would have to be H&D, C&C:Tiberium Sun, and Total Annihilation - all joint #1 I am hoping Supreme Commander will take the crown though soon.

Thought you guys might like a couple of in-game movies of Supreme Commander to give you a sneak peek of the game in action. This is actual game footage from one of my games.

    Clip 1 - 4.5Mb
    Clip 2 - 3.0Mb

Yes they're very short and yes i know they freeze about 2/3 the way through.

And for those interested it seems the BETA is now available to all fileplanet subscribers

Downloaded, Installed but cant get into any game, just keep getting 'Trying to connect'

Right pain in the ass that you cant just get into the game and play around on your own to just see what some of the units are like. cptwhite, whats your username for the GPGNet so I can add you to friends... Mine is Abyss

'cptwhite' ...and by the way you can - host you own game, set the victory mode to "sandbox", check accept button and click go - can can test units to your hearts content. recommend 1280x1024 and low.medium settings, shadows off based on your res.

Thanks cptwhite! It's playing as good as it looks.

Dooms, I got the 'trying to connect' problem too, opening ports 6112 & 9103 in my firewall sorted it out though. Just played (and lost!) my first game. It's as frantic as I remember it.
