I don't think it's a question of trying to stop bullying, it's a question of whether or not sites like YouTube are allowing new forms of bullying that the teachers feel poorly equiped to deal with. After all, there's been bullying in school for practically forever but at least when it was confined to the playground and your trip to & from school, it was controllable to some extent. There was usually some way to get protection.

With the rise of the internet and mobile phones, everyone is more and more reachable and thus targetable by bullies. Whereas before you could at least be fairly sure it'd stop when you got home, now you find kids are being targeted in their own homes, a place where they should feel safe and secure. It's not a lot different to the feelings people get after they're burgled whilst still at home or if they're a vicitim of child abuse from a relative.

Personally, I don't think that shutting YouTube down would make a blind bit of difference to this situation and yes, parental supervision would go some way to helping protect the victims but ultimately this is a result of our choices to lead a much more interconnected "modern" lifestyle where you are always available, no matter where you go and being "out of touch" is a Bad Thing (tm)

Stopping this kind of stuff from being as easily distributed is a good thing. Sure, it's not going to have huge effect, but it doing this is an easy measure that will reduce the harm of the victim.

Of course there's other and bigger factors, but that doesn't mean you should ingore small things either, you should do both.

Personally I think you tube ought to forbid any criminal activities being shown - take some of the ease of bragging out of it and see if it helps.

I am absolutely for trying to stop things like this, but with measures which make sense and not some typical knee-jerk reaction that some uninformed fool has presented. Shutdown youtube because of the odd bad video? Just where do they get their ideas and justifications from?

I think im more angry about the fact that my licence money is going to pay for someone to knock up an article with comments like "They said bullies can send abusive text messages or e-mails to victims"....ughhh

If you don't like someone.. don't give them your bloody mobile number. SIMPLE. And if they send you abusive texts.. report them to the police for sending abusive texts and pretend you don't know them.

To be honest we're exposing kids to technology far too young. My 8 year old cousins have Bebo accounts and they've blatantly lied about their ages, 5 year olds wander around with mobile phones - probably giving their number out willy nilly (why not just get a special phone that only their parents can contact - simple). And we wonder why there are cyber problems.

That's the point though isn't it? Knee jerk reactions are all that's left to try because planning and trying to understand the situation have failed. Things are getting out of hand without anyone really understanding why.
