You should put them in the dark for a day or so until they get used to their new surroundings, take that orange thing out or they will never dig, make sure the starter tunnels you make are big enough for a good few ants to get down each tunnel.
On second thoughts http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/fireants/

so what happens after a year or so?
Ok, I've stuffed mine in my wardrobe, LOL. I'll bring 'em back out on saturday to see what progress they've made.Originally Posted by Famished
The starter holes I made are plenty big enough, and I already chucked the orange thing yesterday.
If they don't get anywhere I'm gonna chuck 'em out onto my lawn and get a new batch.
Ants aren't clever, they're just work shy.
I think you should train them to spell 'HEXUS' in the gel with their tunnels!
Not around too often!
I'm gonna introduce them to my microwave if they don't pick up the pace.
They could probably spell Hexus if you injected paths through the gel with sugar syrup or something; then they would eat through that only. Therefore spelling out HEXUS
Unfortunately....no, i mean fortunately ants and small insects will not die if they are placed in a microwave, they are smaller than the wave itself so they can walk about perfectly fine. Its actually pretty cool to watch ants walking about perfectly while your food is getting nice and hot!Originally Posted by da.Guvna
Of course when they come out they turn in to 50' radioactive monsters

i mean. as in when all the gel stuff has gone.. guessing you will need to buy a new tank? or do you have refil gel or something?Originally Posted by XA04
The gel only lasts for a max of 6 months, so once that's run out you can either let them go, burn them with a magnifying glass, or (seeing as Timmy just RUINED my dreams of execution by microwave) tip them into a pan of boiling sunflower oil.Originally Posted by XA04
Kentucky Fried Ant anyone?
