so does this mean that all 6 SATA ports cant be used, even if you are using 90degree angled SATA connectors?

thats really poor design considering how long 8800s have been out, and with the way things are going - i thought they might mount them side on to prevent this.

No, with the straight cables that I am using, it looks like just the top 2 ports are blocked, Ill try some angled cables later and see if theyll fit.

must admit i've been thinking along those lines, as i use the full compliment with 4x80gb + 2 data drives. could always get a sata addon card but don't really want that.

the 2 pci-e slot is available of course, with asingle card will it work at x16?? Although using that may need careful cable arrangement.

I *think* with 2 x cards in, they both work at 8x, although I'm only going off what I've read, it might not be the case for 1x GPU and 1x raid card.

The most annoying thing about the obscured slots is that one of the slots is an intel and one is the jmicron, meaning that if you want to use the other 4, you are forced to turn on the jmicron controller. Wouldnt have been so bad if it only obscured 2 of the jmicron ones.

no was just thinking of moving gfx card into other pci-e slot to laeve sata ports unbblocked. would gfx card still run at 16.

Ah right, I'm not sure, i would think its 8x? I cant try it either because the hoses wont reach.

Ive just had a look with a torch under the graphics card and it looks as if thise hidden sata ports will be doable with angled connectors, it looks like itll be a tight squeeze though.

It looks as if the bottom pcie slot would be a better bet, thats if it does work at 16x. With the gtx in the bottom slot, it looks as though it might just clear all of the sata sockets, at least it looks as though it would make it a bit less fiddly.

yep that's what i was thinking.
    regarding

should be the same really as the commando but i'm the same as you
I cant try it either because the hoses wont reach.

    just noticed
that one of the slots is an intel and one is the jmicron, meaning that if you want to use the other 4, you are forced to turn on the jmicron controller
that's a bummer thought they were all intel. That makes it the same as the msi board which has 5x sata2 ports excluding e-sata.

I know you don't like gigabyte but the layout of the Gigabyte P35-DS3R looks better layout

I am always highly impressed with your efforts Clunk when it comes to your posts, that and inspired to try and do something similar.

Question, which I hope it isnt a stupid thing to ask. You said you put a backplate on the board and on the P5B board it reduced your temps. What is the backplate and what is it for?

You need one of these, discard the silver bit and the screws, nip to the hardware shop and get yourself some M3 x 60mm screws (or 50mm or 70mm will do) a bag of matching nylon washers and a bag of nuts.

It fits on the back of the board and stops the board from flexing when you fit a waterblock or big heatsink, and as the board is flat, the heatsink sits flat on the cpu and you get better temps

is imo a much better alternative to lapping the ihs & so voiding your warranty.

Ah right I see. I may look into that then as I still seem to be getting some temp issues. Do the excess of the screws thought not get in the way of any heatsink or fans? Or im guessing you can just cut them down to size?

    Cheers for the tips Clunk.

Do you mean intel heatsink by any chance?

You have to remove the clips from the heatsink and the screws just screw through the back plate, then you push it through the board and then bolt the heatsink down. Youll need different sized screws depending on your heastink. If you have a thermalright heatsink, you can use the screws and the brackets that come with that backplate.

    ihs
refers to the metal top/heatsink of the cpu. On amd cpu there's a fad to cut them off, whilst with intel the fashion is to sand them down.
imo clunks method for around a £4 investment offers a less drastic but as effective solution.

    luck
