Watched 'The Guard' last night. Very funny, Irish black comedy with Brendon Gleeson and Don Cheadle.
Not a film for people who dislike swearing and/or unPC jokes though.

I watched Guardians of the Galaxy 2 at the weekend, an enjoyable romp, looks excellent in 4k with HDR. Not quite as good as GOTG1, but that's cos expectations were high... 8.5/10
Watched Hacksaw Ridge at the weekend, was surprisingly good. Harrowing, but good. 8.5/10
Watched The Mummy last night. Film was ok, Tom Cruise was the wrong actor for the part I think. Could have been so much better

I watched Van Helsing in UHD at the weekend. Good disengagement film, very cheesy. 4k improvements are quite noticeable. It was a toss-up between this and Bram Stoker's Dracula, this won, probably because of Ms Beckinsale, but I think BSD is the better film, even with Keanu Reeves' terrible accent.
I enjoyed watching Get Out.

Get Out's brilliant; on an associated (by cast) note, we saw Black Panther last Friday and loved it. Great action sequences, good story, sterling cast.
I watched Murder on the Orient Express at the weekend. Fairly entertaining, probably helped by the fact that neither me or my wife knew the story. Not sure how we managed to avoid that...
TRUTH with Cate Blanchett & Robert Redford, about 60 Minutes story on George' Bush's military record prior to re-election. Very good. On Now TV/Sky etc, but going off in 2 days.
One can never stop saying Thank You
I watched Assassins Creed last night. I'm a big film fan, but I'm aware it's a twentieth century art form that's fading. I've seen quite a few films that play out like PC games(the way the action is foremost), or use games as source, but it doesn't seem to quite work.
AC had an amazing cast, and the usual intense performance from Michael Fassbender. Incredible filming, but something was missing.
It's my belief that gaming will become one of the major art forms of the twenty first century. I'm not sure this cross over idea works. I think the gaming industry needs to absorb the film industry, and use the talent available to take gaming(with VR, potential to play multiple characters, some free will and randomness) to the next level. GTA is already a better representation of inner city life than most films.

Passengers
A story about being woken up 90 years too early on an interstellar space ship. Sci-fi with a bit of romance, most enjoyable.
Fantastic film isn't it? I remember when it came out everybody told me to watch it and I was "nah, I'm not into fighting". Then it came out to rent and everybody told me to watch it and I said the same thing. It was only about a year later when I was struggling to find something to watch somebody pointed out it's not really about fighting per se. I took it home and failed to watch it, and thought I'd cram it in before going to work.
I remember being sat glued to my TV with my socks half on running late for work as I was so engrossed.
Not watching much in films recently, but finally got round to watching Star Trek: Beyond the other week. I really enjoyed the previous two, but this one I felt was fairly poor. I couldn't buy into the plot and it didn't feel very star trek to me.
Bit of an action flick, but that's all.
Annihilation does exactly what it says, to the art of film making. Usual childish story about the alien bogey man, (although the idea of an alien using DNA against us is interesting for a few seconds), but to round off the cliches the entity is destroyed by a simple grenade. Patronising political correctness; all groups that explored entity didn't return, only a group consisting of a sexually and ethnically diverse women can possibly succeed and save humans.
Fight Club was a good film (best to ignore the hype and see films anyway), about male identity(without all the cliches, unlike Annihilation)!.
Annihilation and its sequels were excellent novels (IMO) but apparently there were a lot of changes made for the big screen. Books had a very creepy, otherworldly vibe that stood out for me. AFAICR There was a reason the first group was male only and the second female but can't remember why, but pretty certain it wasn't anything to do with "PC gone mad" as you infer...
'Fight Club' is certainly a more complex piece that to me is about modern (especially white) males' perceived emasculation and the paranoid neuroses it engenders.
