For night time shots, I tend to overexpose a little bit. You pick up the colourful "light pollution" in the sky. If in front of some water, with the long exposure, you get that velvety quality too. IMO, it's not a big deal having lots of blown out white bits from lights if you get the colourful atmosphere.

Here is a photo I took at Sydney Harbour - I think it worked a lot better than the Wellington Harbour shot; its got more of the silky water feel going on. The sky was clear and the weather condtions were a lot better as well...

I would say the fog has lowered the overall contrast of your image, which is why it looks "dull".
Increasing the contrast slightly in post may help a bit there.

Looking at the exif, 30sec at f/14; I personally wouldn't have shot it at f/14.. f/8 - f/11 probably would be enough unless you needed the slower shutter to catch motion blur.

Also, long exposures are usually done at 100 iso. If you have a tripod, there's no excuse not to use 100 iso

That looks good. Interesting how the boat didn't leave any real wake picked up in the photo. Must have been a longish exposure unless he was speeding Ahh 30 secs

Oh, it just clicked, I was wondering what the streaks of light were and I never connected the dots to think it was a boat.

Probably because I rarely ever see boats moving on any body of water round here.

As regards playing with the image I've only just getting back into the hobby - taken with a TZ7 point and shoot. Pentax K-X with twin lens kit is arriving in a couple of days
