Did any of you see 'Stargazing' on the Beeb tonight? One of the items covered taking pictures of nebula/milky way/andromeda/moon/saturn etc from your back garden.
Wondered if any of you skilled people here fancy a shot at it? The results can be surprisingly impressive.

Planetary shots are relatively easy as you wont need a tracking mount for the Moon, or Venus, Jupiter or even Saturn, as the moon only neds 1/250th at say f8, and some seconds exposure in movie mode for planets. Then use a stacking program for the video and process the results. You will need a tracking mount for deep space stuff like nebulae, galaxies etc, as you need sometimes hours of exposure. Good amateur astronomers also use exotic filters like OIII (Oxygen) and Ha (Helium Alpha).
APOD is a good source of samples (astronomy pic of the day) - use google.
Heres one of my own Jupiter shots, 14 seconds AVI from a webcam thru a 1500mm focal length scope at f5.
and here is a mosaic of the full moon, 500mm scope, 15 odd frames :

Isn't Jupiter upside down there?
I thought the big red spot was on the southern hemisphere (not that I imagine North South etc apply on Jupiter. It's probably almost impossible to tell which was is the right way up).
