Is there such a thing as a 400 f4? I have an 18-200 and I'm wondering if to sell it, it's not seen any use since I got my 300mm and 50mm 1.8, but I guess I should keep it just in case...there's a lot of focal length missing if I only have 50 and 300!

18-200 makes a great walkabout lens for on holiday, I'd keep it.

You had me excited there! I suddenly thought there was a 2.8 that I'd never seen, alas as I thought the 200-400 is only f4.

I couldnt justify the 2.8 Im only an amateur after all. (saying that, Ive just sold three framed churches at £35 each which is a start)

Nice! Always good when you can make a bit of cash from something you love doing! Was speaking to a guy the other day with his 200-400, its a very big and heavy old thing!

the 80-400 then... have you looked at the bigma? 50-500 instead?

Two from Sunday at WWT Barnes:

Green Woodpecker
Landed on the grass in front of the hide and started eating ants. Window was closed and the WWT staff said to leave it closed or it'll fly, so had to take through glass. Because it was so close I couldn't get any further back so couldn't get the full body in + had to take handheld at 630mm so not pin sharp.



This little guy was following me around for about 15 minutes along the path, but always made sure he was being obscured by a branch or something else so I had to go for a crop instead. Love the feather detail!

420mm @ 1/500 should be plenty fast enough for sharp shots hand held..

nice shots all round, but you should think about putting your name somewhere on those photographs if you're going to upload that big..

Thanks. Although it's not 420 with the crop factor of the camera, so it's a bit more difficult

As for my name, well, I don't want an intrusive watermark and if I just place my name bottom corner, people will just clone it out. To be honest, I just do this for my own enjoyment so let somebody steal it as far as I'm concerned, I know for myself that I took the shot Or would you suggest putting something on it anyway, just to cover myself for future?

Always watermark your work, hobby or otherwise. What you might think to be an average shot, someone else may think is perfect to use for their advertising purposes or such and how gutted would you then be to see your work being used for major financial gain and under someone else's name to boot.

Yes, it can be cloned out but if you make it large enough you can make it a much more difficult job. A watermark barely even has to be visible, in fact the larger ones that you can barely see are far more effective than a little thing in the corner.
