Err, the temps are a problem in my opinion. People have reported auto fan speeds going loopy as a result, not to mention overclockers (I know this isn't everyone) not being able to gauge temperatures accurately. They're not major issues and can be resolved with tweaking, but you shouldn't have to do that to get things running properly. I think it's for reasons like this the likes of Abit etc.. have removed official "45nm Supported" brandings from their products and replaced them with "n/a".

Because the hype machine promising 4ghz+ started to whip up a market that will pay the asking price, that's why you're seeing e8400s at £125 on release now being sold for £200+. I appreciate the supply/demand/price/availability business model, and from a business standpoint it makes perfect sense - but fanboys on forums have only got themselves to blame for incessant "I want one" posts for assisting in jacking up prices. Companies can see exactly how much demand they're going to have for an item before they even order it in - let alone resell on.

I seriously think we're going to go through all of this again w/c 17th March, I wouldn't mind so much if it sorted the frame rate out in Crysis

I think the temp issue is a major issue, I don't think any amount bios updates or tweaking will fix it if the sensors on the intel chip are out of whack, when Intel start shipping batches where no one reports having temp issues is when I'll be buying one.

I can understand why they are doing this but they are overcharging people unless the suppliers are charging more but other etailors are stil charging under £130. Also one of the etailors I have bought off this week has had at least 75 of these in and has had live stock on their site so scan being a premier partner seems odd especially when this etailor sells them for £128. I have been a loyal customer for a few years now and have spent a few thousand with them in this time but this sort of thing makes loyal customers go elsewhere.

I couldn't agree more, and as such another online e-tailer has lost my business as a result of their exorbitant price rises. I think we'll just have to go back to sniffing out the bargains on the smaller sites, instead of relying on the big 4-5 to give us the lowest prices.

It does make you look away when you see prices shoot up just because they are in short supply and they know they can make a quick buck.

    Re: E8400 in stock????

Supply and demnad is a thing we all have to get use to.

Saying that........there is no way that E8400 is any value unless its under £130.

If anyone pays more then they have more money than sense, especially seeing as how there is a huge amount of problems with them.

Hello Scan ... (bump) ... any update to the Wolfdale E8400 ?

Gosh, I'm waiting like a sucker.

Has Intel closed down and we haven't been notified yet ?

    Re: E8400 in stock????

I acauly think that the e8300 will be the best bang for buck considering the price.. but also seeing as the e8300 is stated as £2 cheaper than the e8200 im pretty sure its real pricing is around £120-£125.

But still the only difference is 0.5 in the multipler.

    e8200 - 8
    e8300 - 8.5
    e8400 - 9

e8300 wins i think when it comes to pricing and performance.

    Re: E8400 in stock????

That's right Dr Cool, if I may say so.

    First I thought, hang on ... doesn't the 8300 have a smaller L2 cache ?
Then I found that E8200 up to the E8500 have all 6 MB L2 cache.

It was the Q9000 series I was thinking of by mistake: the Q9300 (and below) have 2x3MB cache and the Q9450 (and above) have 2x6MB cache.

This new “Core” micro-architecture provided a leap in performance as well as power efficiency
The E8000 series is sporting 410 million transistors on only 107 mm². An E6000 processor has 291 million transistors, but measures 143 mm².
Another advantage of 45nm technology is that it allows Intel to produce more dies from one wafer. This reduces production cost and should (theoretically) lead to lower retail prices.
In a nutshell: The new E8000 processor series comes with a 25% smaller die, 40% more transistors, 6 MB L2 cache instead of 4 MB, a few internal execution tweaks, consumes less power and boasts 47 new SMID instructions.

Very interesting facts about this processor

    Re: E8400 in stock????

With a BIOS voltage setting of 1.425v resulting in an actual voltage of around 1.385v, and additional MCH voltage as well, we could push the E8500 up to 9.5 x 452 MHz = 4294 MHz. This was still with the retail HSF. The CPU temperature was above 70C when running Prime95.
At this stage we changed to water cooling ... we settled for 9.5x490 MHz = 4655 MHz. With a processor voltage of 1.525 volt, resulting in an actual load voltage of 1.48v ... The required voltage to get the E8500 stable at 4655 MHz was therefore a hefty 30% above default.
At 4655 MHz we recorded impressive performance gains: The multi-CPU score in Cinebench R10 went up 41%, compressing a 90 MB file with WinRAR was done 46% faster, and when gaming with “Lost Planet” we got 38% more frames per second compared with the default speed of 3160 MHz.
It seems our E8000 overclocking results are not exceptional. We have seen similar results reported in our Intel forum and other enthusiast sites. For example Dinos22 in this thread is enjoying 5675MHz from his E8500.
Intel has been ramping up 45nm production for almost half a year now. Intel CEO Otellini has stated at the beginning of March that their fabs have already shipped more than 4 million 45nmm processors since November 2007 and are currently putting out 100,000 such processors a day. The supply problem should therefore be solved in the near future.
... these processors do not cost more than previous generation E6000 CPUs but offer better performance, lower power consumption, and better overclocking potential. Nonetheless we would like to mention that the Penryn family of E8000 and Q9000 processors is only a transitional product. Intel is preparing a completely new micro-architecture, a new socket, and new chipsets for the beginning of 2009. In less than 10 months we will have a new, probably even more powerful processor and chipset generation available. For the time being we recommend the 45nm based E8000 dual-core and Q9000 quad-core series without reservation. These products offer excellent value for the mentioned prices, and are currently without a competitor, when it comes to performance.
    The E8000 Series
