i agree the site is slow, furthermore the sorting features for components are not great or infact non existant. I still prefer the old site

Its alright, but the old site was much easier to navigate
Scan FTW
I guess it will all get ironed out over time. One thing i am really annoyed about with the site though, which i am seething about...............................Makes me want to spend my money!!!
Well quite a surprise to be greeted by a new Scan screen!
Looking down some nice touches like quick add and parcel track with an overall nice uncluttered look.
But then.. Introducing another screen between clicking product category and see the products :s The old pop up menu was useful and selecting one category or show all can be a little limiting but gets you there faster, can we have at least the choice to go straight to show all or the choose category page? At the very least perhaps you can show latest additions to that category from the last 7 (or selctable) days so the page bears a use as well? Or indeed have a selectable box for new additions, its useful to us who are long term customers and know the most range but like to see the new kit.
I liiked to be able to hover the mouse over OOS items and it pops up a restock date where known, is this coming back?
It was mentioned elsewhere but the page weights seem high, random example for a Samsung F1 500GB http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=807030 was over 600KB. Most home users are limited by monthly allowances even on our 'unlimited' products so trimmimg some of the fat would be nice as we can rack up quite a usage browsing just a few dozen pages.
I found the categories took longer to load even the first 'choice' level, but once loaded resorting (ie sort price/sort manufacturer) was pleasantly easy and fast, so adding a potentially useful feature.
Looks alot nicer and was very supprised when i first saw it, much nicer and cleaner looking, well done!
another problems which i think should get sorted is the sorting feature, on the old site, lets say hard drives, you wanted to see only the "western digital" this old site would be able to pull out only the WD hard drives rather than the whole lot.
I think this feature for me presonally was very handy and i hope it comes back
I think DavidM has said that sorting/filtering by manufacturer will return.
Looks good so far guys clean and fresh have not ordered nothing yet so cant comment on the rest.
If you select view all its nearly impossible to filter back to the one or two categoeries that you really want. Could you ensure that there is a select none button alongside the view all button.
Either that or the view all button should toggle so that its possible to unselect all categories.
We will indeed update this over the coming days, we were waiting for hte new site to launch to see how the navigation worked to see if we could incorporate it easily.

One thing I would like to suggest, to have the top products list split down into columns that will use the available space. They could also maybe have the option to increase/decreased the font size of the items shown specifically?
Basically on a 1280x1024 there is space for another column of products, this would take 1" of screen estate back for the user to see the products on sale easier.

Oh and one other thing - there seems to be an epic number of images on each page
Matt.
Please do not message me about Scan Free shipping, I no longer work for HEXUS.net
I know that this has been commented on before but why is the design of the home page such that even on my 1680x1050 monitor i have to scroll down to see the whole page because of the enormous graphics and wasted space.
Good looking site. It would be great if you could save your shopping basket, if, for example like me you're in the process of deciding on a pc build!

Perhaps because it's been designed by a designer that's trying to show off pretty, visually elegant design rather than thinking about customer usage. What used to be done very quickly and easily with the context sensitive menu and a very small, fast mouse movement now requires selecting a category, clicking, scrolling down to the next filter screen (which is poorly laid out, by the way), selecting another option (or options), clicking again, then scrolling down past about half a mile of largely unnecessary stuff before you get to the product section ..... where you again find poor use of space so that everything takes up far too much vertical space, again necessitating far too much scrolling.
I don't do much online shopping, though as it happens, I am about to buy the bits to upgrade one, perhaps two of my machines. But with me, it's a rarity. But the more I play with this site, the more I become convinced that it is NOT designed with the user experience in mind, and the more I come to dislike it.
The old site perhaps used to look a bit dated, but it was fast and easy to use. It was also perhaps lacking in a feature or two, but this new design is simply very pretty to look at, and clumsy and clutsy to use. I've been trying to price up those system upgrades, and the use of space is seriously driving me up the wall. I've given up. It's a great shame too, because from what I've seen, Scan are one of the better, if not the best, online retailer. But this new site is driving me away from even bothering to try to use it. And I'm not exaggerating. I've tried to use it and I've tried to like it. I really have. And so far, failed dismally.
For me, it's the use of space in the templates. There's far too much gumph between the category selection area and the details of products, and even once you get to the product area, each product takes up far too much space. Generally, it just requires far, FAR too much mouse movement just to navigate around a given page, and the layout and use of space means I can see about half the products on screen at any given time that I used to be able to, so I;m scrolling back and forth as I look for the right product and compare spec and value for money.
At least until such time as a design targeted at lower-res screens becomes available, I think my initial impression is confirmed. In my opinion, it's very pretty but horrible to use, and several giant steps backwards. And that low-res version needs to be far more than just shrinking text size. It needs to think MUCH more about the user experience, and in particular, the amount of scrolling it requires and the time it takes a user to achieve something on the site.
I think what sums it up is that if you judge by what you get shown on screen, it seems to be about presenting the user with either explanations of products or adverts, not about offering the user concise information about products actually sold. For example, after selecting Internal Hard drives and the 400GB-1TB range, I've got an entire screen of gumph explaining what a hard drive is and giving an overview of SATA.
Scan, do you really think most people buying hard drives really need to have it explained to them what one is? By all means put that kink of thing in an info box people can get at if they want it, but don't make people scroll past a whole screen of that sort of stuff to get at the stuff they want to buy. And if you've selected two drive categories, even they are separated by half a screen of that gumpf.
The design seems to be based on the notion that the three-column design is the prime criteria, because it allows the use of advertising on the right and the summary sections on the left. The result is that the main, central column is restricted in size, and with the information in it, the "Description" field now takes up to six lines, meaning that the products are spread out over far more space than they used to be, making it far, FAR harder to look up and down the list to visually compare and contrast products and prices.
Sorry, but no. As far as I'm concerned, in usability terms, it's a disaster.
