    Re: Photo-a-day

Mars was near the moon last night. I saw it at about 9pm but couldn't be bothered taking a photo. I'm sure everyone has seen photos of the moon.

Can't wait to see what you can do with it Bobster.

Here's one from last night with my 55-250....

And some more that I've taken recently.... could really do with a longer lens!

    Re: Photo-a-day

And so follow a million identical shots.

These ones are full photos resized at different focal lengths just to show the zoom difference...

    135mm

    500mm

500mm plus 2 x teleconverter. This one was pretty soft, so it would probably be just as good to expand the size of the 500mm one.

I like yours, they're much sharper.

Which lens did you use for those?

    Re: Photo-a-day

Sigma 50-500mm and a Canon 28-135mm for the 135mm shot. I have a Jessops brand teleconverter which I bought in 2002 but it takes away a lot of detail.

It's interesting using live view and watching the moon move across the screen. Live view, position the moon so that there is a lot of space for it to move in to, manual focus, remote shutter release after waiting for the lens to stop wobbling.

yes mars was quite close to the moon. Only problem was that its impossible to expose for both at the same time - mars looks like a big star if you exposed for mars the moon as just a white blob of blown highlights !

    Re: Photo-a-day

I made a macro flash ring for the onboard flash using some cardboard and foil today. It works ok, but a mirror reflecting down on the object would probably work just as well.

God knows how I haven't lost these after all this time.

I'm going to go with practice on that one, along with maybe some instruction, reading, and more practice. I can see the difference in my pictures after only a couple of years.

Nice PP and light. I'd lose the vignette a bit though - you've blocked up the blacks in the corners. Compositionally it's a bit 'meh' from me - it's pretty but not much more.

since 2003 i have taken approx 50,000 pictures with my 300D (yes it still gets used now and then )
one of my 20D bodies has over 230,000 clicks
and my 2nd 20D has over 150,000 clicks

so yeah practice, practice, practice, experimentation, a little reading here and there, lots of inspiration from other photographers and some instruction back when i was @ college; as in here's a SLR camera with a 50mm manual focus lens, here's some b+w film, this is how you change shutter and aperture - off you go
