Right, well, you've turned on the 'thumper' thing using the generator near the shack? Well, right near 'thumper' is a rocky plateau which you jump up on (to the left when facing the ocean). Just jump up there and down the other side and get ready to run.

If you really want to know....

You have to walk on the sand. Run down to the end of the enclosed area, and 'the daddy' of ant lions comes out to great ya. There is a friendly with and emplaced weapon down the far end, kill it with the help of this guy.

I have to agree with that guy about farcry graphics being better.
It seems like the graphics are old and then they added some effects like the water. Check out this screeny, and no i didnt run off course to take this.
There doesn't seem to be much bump mapping if any.
Off topic i know but im just replying to what the guy said earlier.
Texture quality is on medium but still this is a joke...

That is awful IQ on that screen, are you sure you aren't running it in DX7 mode?

Your card can take high texture detail so put it to high.

Try a greater level of anisotropic filtering also.

That really is a bad quality screenie. I'll try and get one in a min of water effects on my machine, on medium and high. See if there's a difference.

    Try this:

    - Medium Settings

    - High Settings

I can't actually see any differences between the two though... That's pretty good detail IMO!

:edit: Yeah, I can see the difference, there's more in the reflections on the High Settings.

Bloody hell thats good graphics. The reflections are amazing. I have heard that the water effects put farcry to shame, but I didnt think they would be that good. I can't wait to get a copy of the game!

The water effects are good. Far Crys are good also. I particularly like the effect of water running up the shore on Far Cry which HL2 doesnt have. Both games have good gfx but in different ways.

The screenshot from doctor_prox does look bad but it was chosen to show the game up IMO. There are 2 things going on 1 genuine and 1 not as far as I can see. The texture on the land is BAD - and there are a few bits in the game where you can see rough textures up close. The other one - the water - is because (if I'm correct) it's the level with the bridge in and the player is actually meant to be quite a way up from the water. The water in Far Cry doesn't look good from 14 million miles away either...

For my 2p I think much of HL2's visual excellence is down to model and texture design. But anyway - it looks good and it plays good. So who give's a flying monkey what the underlying tech is?

Actually... Ignore at least some of that ^^

Just scrolled to the right and saw the gun... What's up with that?

Must be something up with the drivers / card / dx / game on that PC.

Can anyone with the game take a pic of the same place taken by Allen so we can compare it and see if it looks any different/better?

My graphics were actually like you posted on the hovercraft bit. My point is, there is no bump mapping so walls look flat, and it seems like overall the graphics are dated, then they added bits like cool water and shiny stuff to make up for it. They put a lot of effort into areas like the boat bit and none into the screeny above. I like bump mapping

But surely if they made the graphics any better than what they are, like with bump mapping, then HL2 would run like a slideshow, even on an X800XT??

:edit: Oh, and I just got an email from Vivendi saying that HL2 was now available! LOL, how old?? Do they actually want to make 'any' money from this game?
