Aliens, sure. Aliens with god-like powers and a love of carpentry, absolutely. But actual God? No.

The difference has been covered on the religion thread, but basically a 'god' by definition must exist outside of any physical laws. Aliens with god-like powers would be able to do some crazy stuff, but there would be a physical reason they were able to, even if we cannot comprehend it.

When you get into infinite universes though, surely anything could be done by doing it through another universe where the conditions were right to do it, therefore bypassing what we would class as physical laws?

Imagine if there are no aliens out there...

All that wasted CPU time on SETI@Home could have been used for something else

I still believe theres life apart from us other there, whether or not they deem us 'intelligent' enough to talk and come and see us is another thread entirely.

If there are, lets hope they don't find MySpace or catch I'm A Celebrity before they meet us in person!

And if they do meet humans personally, let's hope their first encounter isn't a Chav!

You might have a universe with different physical laws, but the entities within it would still be bound by the laws of that universe, and so not 'god' by definition.

We're getting away from the issue though, which is aliens in our own universe.

I think many people forget how vastly different ann alien race could be or the fact they could be far more advanced than us in some areas and not others.

For example, theres only one inhabited planet orbiting our sun. Perhaps their 2 or 3 surrounding theirs. It would mean they would of developed space travel much more aggressively than us Or vice versa they could quite easily still be playing with fire and drawing on cave walls(hey we might get to be the advanced warlike creatures from another planet), or again they could be based on a completely different physology than us and not need the exact conditions present on earth for us to flourish. They may survive in atmospheres that would kill humans. Maybe life isn't as unique as we think and we're just in a particularly desolate part of the universe(or even mutliverse if you believe some scientists). Aliens seem almost impossible if you think their going to be man like, with two legs and two arms living in high rises fighting wars over fossils and books. Equally they may well be.

Remember not long ago we still rode on animals, and not too long before that claiming a peice of metal could travel at great speeds using it's own power would of gotten you burnt at the stake, so would claiming to have a set of spinning sticks(gatling gun) that could decimate ranks of massed, well armed soliders in seconds, or a single bomb that could destroy the worlds biggest cities, not including the fact it would fly thousands of miles from parts of the world not even discovered yet in a few minutes to do it or having moving pictures in trapped a box. This is only the last few hundred years. Only 2 or 3 generations in some case. Hell not long before that the world was flat, and that was scientfic fact just like not being able to travel faster than the speed of light or millions of other theories that surround space, life and all the rules which we take for granted.

Then again we might spend the next few thousands years looking and find nothing at all, but I find the idea this is the only inhabited planet ever, anywhere at any time far more improbable than there being something, even just worms and fish out there on another planet.

EDIT: Did you think you wrote enough chuck?

    Aliens out there? Yup
    Visited us? Not likely
Why? Cos if they're like us they can't.... and if they're anything like us they're prolly too busy blowing each other up to fly around space.

Why would they be like us? Because we live to live. We strive for expansion, we want to be dominant, and it doesn't matter whether they LOOK like us or even breath, or are in another dimension.....if they survived for as long as we have, and make progress of any sort like we have, they'll have done it by beating hell out of each other.

What to fear: A race that actually works as a team. The Romans were the last really....and they wore skirts. IF an alien race is out there that works as a team, we better NOT find them, meet them etc.

Cos we can't organise a small scale war without changing sides, selling arms to our future enemies, killing our own troops, etc etc.

I totally agree with you Zak33, I don't think we stand a chance against another race that might be in this universe.

Well they did say, if an alien race were able to reach earth, then they're definitely likely to be able to defeat us.

That depends, if the first aliens we meet are a small craft of deep sapce explorers their not likely to be armed. Also there's no reason for war, unlike sci-fi movies would have you believe. They probably dont need the space. Given that if they can travel here they can probably find a hundred other suitable planets without thousands of nuclear weapons on.

Probably not in need of resources, especially as most of the 'rare' resources on earth are only rare on earth. Theres diamonds the size of planets floating out in space etc.

Xenophobia/religious reasons, possible, but this is supposedly an 'advanced' race one of the basic ways of becoming advanced is embracing change. I dont know of any churches with space programs.

Thanks to hollywood, people find the idea of intelligent life in implausable, but the idea of evil space pirates far more logical.

I like to think the movie 'Contact' has a realistic idea of how contact with an advanced alien race might be. Especially the difficulties mankind has with the 'enemy within', rather than with hostile aliens.

Never did manage to watch Contact although I did read the book.

Signs had to be one of the dumbest movies around - aliens travel from wherever it is that they came from and landed on a planet 2/3 covered with water which immediately kills them.

I would say that if religion continues in its current form, when aliens are here, there will be war because some thick **** will decree that the existence of aliens is against god's will or something similarly stupid.
